Attempt to Filibuster Alito Goes Nowhere

A Democratic attempt to filibuster the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. ended in failure Monday, with almost half of the Senate's Democrats voting against it — an outcome that cleared the way for Alito's confirmation to a seat on the high court today.

Massachusetts Sens. John F. Kerry and Edward M. Kennedy launched the filibuster drive last week in what they described as a last-ditch effort to halt the confirmation of Alito, a federal appeals court judge that liberals have charged is a conservative ideologue who will shift the Supreme Court to the right. The Senate voted 72 to 25 to end debate on President Bush's nomination of Alito. Democrats described the attempted filibuster, which appeared doomed from the start, as a stand on principle.

"Trying everything in our power to stop an ideological coup on the Supreme Court was the right thing to do," Kerry said. "We knew we faced steep odds, but we also knew that once Judge Alito becomes Justice Alito, there's no turning back the Senate confirmation vote."

The filibuster effort split the Senate's 44 Democrats, 19 of whom voted to end debate.

Boobsey twins

LOL

I'm not sure what "boobsey twins" means, but I'm an man, and I have a particular affection for boobies, as long as the grey matter hasn't been substituted for mammalian glands.

My ex was a D and I don't think I can't go back to C's.

I know I must be considered a, what's that word NOW uses, a chauvinistic pig? I accept that. I just happen to like women shaped like Sophia Loren.

It's just a personal preference. Some people like anchovies on their pizza, some people don't. I like anchovies and Sophia Loren. Does that make me a bad man?

Physical attraction is important and it's often what initially gets men and women talking, but it wouldn't lead me to a one-night stand or a life-long commitment.

There's lots of women with Playmate bodies out there but most of them are idiots (trust me, I've been out there). I really need brains for a long term relationship, or unfortunately for me at this stage in my life, a quicky bang.

Plus, they have to be conservatives (which goes along with being smart).

I hate being honest (especially about this stuff), but that's the way my parents raised me.

Don't feel bad. I've got Dickhead Durbin and Barack "Osama" Obama!

Durbin and "Osama" Obama got nothing on the two K's from MA. I watched parts of the CSPAN Alito "debate" and the two K's are OUT TO LUNCH! (one with drinks, one just because he's insane).

They don't really have any idea what socialism is. They all need a good year in Cuba.

One of their favorite platforms in my mind is their zeal for a "Free" National Healthcare Insurance Plan" - their source of paying for this monster - TAX THE RICH. They are the socialist party plain and simple. Everyone needs to be brought to the same level.

"Give Johnny and Fat Teddy some credit. The divided the Democratic Party in a way we could never do. );-)"

Yes, indeed, that was excellent work on their part. Still, when I read in the article that "The filibuster effort split the Senate's 44 Democrats ...", my first thought was "That's too many Democrats!"
