Maybe someone can explain to me why we have something called Presidents day and we have MLK's birthday?

How come we do not have Civil Rights Day and Presidents Day? I would think that Lincoln and Washington deserve their own days about as much, if not more than MLK.

I honestly think we should have a Lincoln's birthday and a Washington's Birthday holiday.

That doesn't bother me at all.

And I don't mind MLK Day.

We should honor those that truly had an impact on this country. MLK is certainly one of them.

Because democrats, in their eternal search for recognition, were trying to regain some semblance of minority notice, reestablish themselves as THE party of blacks, and trying to find votes. How else to impress black voters than to declare a special holiday for a fallen leader? Had things been left to the democrats, blacks would STILL be unable to vote, etc.

Thanks to a Republican vote back in the 60's, blacks were given equal opportunity, equal everything. Democrats were completely AGAINST it. Please read up on your history...

It is amazing to me that so many young people think democrats were for the blacks equality! They voted against all of it!! Good old senator Byrd was a member of the KKK, for goodness sakes!

Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson, etc., WILL milk this for all it's worth. The saddest part is that these are people who couldn't care less about black people. It's all about the dollar and the vote.

When I was a kid in the late 40s early 50s, we did celebrate both Lincoln Feb 12th and Washington's birthdays Feb 22 in school; however, they were only ten days apart. I think the Federal government had holidays on both days (For those who grew up in DC, the Federal workers' calendars determined a lot of the social schedule).

Twenty years ago, when pressure for an MLK day had successfully interested Congress in making it a holiday, the two February Presidents' holidays were rolled into one, Presidents' Day, and MLK was given his own day.

Having lived through segregation and having seen the disgraceful way white people acted under Jim Crow, and having seen the positive changes that have come about for black middle-class Americans, and having witnessed Dr. King's speeches and actions contemporaneously, I have to say he deserved enormous honor on the same level as Lincoln and Washington. He broke a shameful legacy through his moral stance and intelligence about it. He was head and shoulders above the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton weenies of today - a giant intellect and a man of integrity.

I was disappointed about his sexual escapades, but sad to say, such behavior was all too common among a great many men of the time, from media images like James Bond to the real-life Demo-idol, John F. Kennedy and his family members.
