As much as I hate to promote anything done by PBS, "American Experience" is
one of their few islands of sanity and quality.
It will be interesting to see how the legal issues and history are
handled on this show.

The owner of a Fargo ND trucking company I used to do business with participated in the Nuremburg trials as a young attorney in the US Army.

I can't recall the name, but sometime in the past year or two, I heard
a radio interview with a lawyer that had been part of the proceedings.

I just can't wait to see if "American Experience" will stick with their
usual even-handedness with this show...or mess it up with anti-Dubya
comparisons to Gitmo and legal affairs for the Islamofacist detainees.

He said it was a very sobering experience. His mom and dad were German and they spoke German at home, which is probably how he ended up over there. He said the defendants knew they were facing the noose and they cried almost continuously.

The IG Farben Cartel was dismantled and split by the Nuremberg Tribunal into the daughter companies Hoechst, Bayer and BASF. With the help of Nelson Rockefeller, their former business partner and US Undersecretary of State after the war, all convicted IG Farben managers were released from prison already in 1952 and reassumed positions in the highest levels of German industry. The prediction of Nuremberg Tribunal prosecutor Taylor soon became true. In post-war Germany the positions of chairmen of Hoechst, Bayer and BASF were held by war-time IG Farben directors and former members of the Nazi party for over a quarter of a century after the second world war. Hoechst, Bayer and BASF lost no time to build up other political leaders to serve their interests in post-war Germany. Between 1959 and 1969 Helmut Kohl worked for the “Verband der Chemischen Industrie”(Association of Chemical Industry), the largest lobby organization of 3 the chemical-pharmaceutical industry. This industry systematically promoted Helmut Kohl’s political career thereby continuing to instrumentalize the German government for their global expansion plans. And their investment paid out. Now, fifty years after the Nuremberg Tribunal split the criminal IG Farben Cartel into Hoechst, Bayer and BASF each of these three daughter companies is 20 times larger than the IG Farben empire ever was.

"...fifty years after the Nuremberg Tribunal split the criminal IG

Well, the products of WWII and the Nuremburg Trial did have lots
of unintended outcomes and strange ironies.
It will be intersting to see how this show treats the legacy of
the proceedings.

To: VOA; All

The Nuremburg trials expose the hipocracy of the US. The opening lines of the transcripts speak of crimes against humanity, etc.

We firebombed Dresden to kill civilians, nuked two cities, and have no right to have spoken against crimes of humanity when we ourselves were guilty of it.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't have prosecuted those Nazi sons of *##$# who committed those horrible atrocities, but the wording should have reflected the reality of the situation that nobody was innocent, though some were guilty of severe savagry and torture.

War can provide some coverage for Dresden and Hiroshima/Nagasaki, but there was no cover for the actions of the Nazis. So don't think I'm equivocating here -- I'm not.

(War is hell, and it sucks, but sometimes it's necessary...)

flame away

There's a great book about I.G. Farben (can't remember the full title) and "The Arms of Krupp" if you're into the history of German-owned businesses that touched beyond der Vaterland. I read them while stationed in West Germany back in the '70s.
