Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police say their search for a missing Cecil County teenager has become a recovery operation.
“As far as the Natural Resources Police is concerned, everything points to the worst,” said Sgt. Ken Turner.
So far, search efforts have failed to find the 15-year-old last seen Thursday afternoon in a canoe in the Elk River.
“He was reported missing around 6:45 p.m.,” said Turner.
The search covered every possibility.
“We searched air, land and water until 1 a.m., then started back at 7 a.m.,” Turner said.
On Friday, the search was increased with the addition of K-9 assistance from Chesapeake Search and Rescue and Shore K-9.
The red canoe was found at about 10 a.m. Friday off Locust Point.
The teen was last seen wearing a purple turtleneck shirt, purple jeans and possibly a brown coat. He is described as six feet tall with dark brown hair.
Turner said the air and K-9 searches were canceled Sunday because of the weather.
The name of the teen has not been released at the request of the family, Turner said.
The search is to resume at daybreak today.
“We will continue to search. Weather will determine if we have air or K-9, but at a minimum we will have vessels back in the area,” Turner said.
*ping* local news...I have a 16 year old boy who boats the river often. It's way too cold right now unless you have a wetsuit. An absolute tragedy for the family and community.
I knew the missing boy. He is not the type to just leave his family behind worrying. Our church continues to pray for him from another state. He and his siblings are quite brilliant, wonderful kids. I have been crying all week over this miserable loss.
