Chafee will vote against Alito
PROVIDENCE -- U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee announced this morning that he will vote against the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court.
In a statement issued at a press conference this morning, the Rhode Island Republican said he was "greatly concerned" about some of Alito's philosophies.
Chafee described himself as a "pro-choice, pro-Bill of Rights" Republican, in explaining his decision against Alito.

As sure as the sun is shinning, there is, was, and always will be a litmus test for liberals like Chafee and the Democrats. Didn't you mean to say that "As sure as the sun is shinning, there is, was, and always will be a litmus test for conservatives on Free Republic, and that is thou shalt not be pro choice."

Elect a DEM, at least we know where they stand. This a-hole is never there when we need him.

If the worst happens and the Democrats pick up the seat, will it really be any worse? Not in terms of roll call votes. However, an ostensible Republican, even of the RINO variety, counts in the party caucus when it comes to determining the majority, including the running and chairing of the Senate committees. Although not critical now, it potentially could mean something if there were a 50-50 Senate tie. Remember the famous "power-sharing" arrangement of 2000?

Back-stabber!!! And Abortion is AGAINST the Bill of Rights. Wrong on both counts. A back stabber says one thing and does another which chaffee has not done. And the bill of rights says nothing about abortion.

I can't wait for all those 'bots to tell me again how it's better to have a liberal republican, than no republican at all. Well,it is only better in the sense that the R gives us one more number to ensure majority party status. That said, I think Laffey is now the good bet to beat Chafee in the primary.
Hopefully we can overcome the loss of this seat by taking a Dem seat somewhere else (minn, Fla, etc) because there is no way Laffey wins in November in a socialist sh*thole like RI.

"With Snowe, Chafee, Specter, Voinovich and sometimes McCain in there, we are really close to a 50/50 tie with the Dems IN PRACTICE"Exactly.
Which is why the Republicans need to bolster their number this fall, because there is a soft craven underbelly to this putative "majority".

Never forget the treasonous bastards. He voted what he thinks is correct. Why is that treasonous ? Giving away military secrets is treasonous. An up or down vote on a judge is not.

That's easy - it affects the membership of the committees. It's always better to have a RINO than a Dem for that reason alone.

OK, that's it - I just made an online contribution to Chafee's primary opponent, Steve Laffey. Laffey is a real conservative alternative, and I hope the republicans of RI back him up in the primary. If you want to know more about Steve Laffey, here's the link:

Time to find a real Republican in Rhode Island!Sorry, but the last one (me) left RI in 1981, shortly after a commencement ceremony at the Ocean State Theatre.
