Footnote to our discussion: Galileo's book remained on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum until 1822, which is well after Newton's work (mid 1600s) -- and thus well after any "proof" Newton gave for the solar system. And, this is new to me, it was only in 1966 that the Index ceased to be published.
