I thought this made some sense when cloture looked close, but a loss of this magnitude is a disaster, it just smooths the way for the next appointment. I know Kerry isn't the sharpest knife in the draw, but this was really stupid.
Kerry may very well have just dropped the nuke on his own side. Will anyone take the Dims seriously the next time they scream "filibuster"? Their mighty weapon turns out to be - a straw for shooting spitballs.

Sen. John Ensign (R) Nevada was not there, so that would have made 73. He was in a car accident this morning on his way to the airport to return to D.C. Also, it looks like two others did not vote. Do not know who they are.

One has to wonder if Kerry was set up by someone on the 'Rat Party. Carville would be smart enough to pull this off.
Problem with that logic is that this kind of loss makes all of the 'Rats look pretty bad.
I don't like to assume stupidity is the reason for something like this, but it's hard to avoid that conclusion. Sucks to be Mr. Ed or Ted!!
