President Nixon nominated a conservative southern jurist, Clement Haynesworth, to the Supreme Court. His nomination was defeated in the Democrat-controlled Senate, with the help of liberal Republicans, by a vote of 55 - 45 on the grounds that as a judge he had made rulings favoring segregation and decisions in which he had a financial interest.

Nixon then nominated G. Harold Carswell, who fared even worse and was rejected.

Nixon then nominated Harry Blackmun, a lifelong Republican who gave us Roe v. Wade.

Thanks for the info on the Nixon appointees. It's just more proof that the Republican Party (and Conservatives) are far, far stronger now than ever. The 'Rats and the Left want to stop Alito as much as, or even more than the examples you cited -- but they just don't have either the votes or the PR juice to do it.
Nixon also tried to nominate Robert Byrd for the Supreme Court, as we all learned recently.
