Durbin criticizes Miers

WASHINGTON Illinois Senator Dick Durbin is stepping up his criticism of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, although he continues to take no position on whether he will vote to confirm President Bush's choice for the high court.
The Senate's number-two ranking Democrat says after meeting Miers earlier this month he was left shaking his head. He says Miers said nothing to help him make a decision.

Durbin says he wonders why Miers is making the rounds with senators if it's going to produce such frustration.

He says it troubles him to think this is happening with Miers, a woman who helped the White House go through the vetting process with numerous nominees over the years.

He says the burden is on Miers to produce information about herself for next month's Senate Judiciary Committee hearings.

Durbin also complained that Miers has refused to say whether she sees a right of privacy in the Constitution. Durbin says Bush's previous nominee to the court, now Chief Justice John Roberts, said he saw it in three sections of the document.

Durbin says it's not good enough that Bush says that White House lawyer Miers is the best possible nominee. Durbin _ a member of the committee - says that just doesn't cut it.

Reid talking about empty promises?

How about this one?:

Bush "I will nominate strict constructionists to the bench"

Not very empty, huh Harry?
