Thanks for that information. I remember as a small child watching the story of Sgt. York (the one with Gary Cooper). He really had a struggle. Unfortunately you don't see it. Considering the timing of the movie's production and release (1941), it delved far too much into an assumed mixture of nationalism and faith (something some conservatives have been doing far too much of late IMHO). Granted York made his decision but at the same time I wouldn't hold it against a person of true faith to make the exact opposite decision. His family held some very strong views
Also note that when King Saul went to war with Amalek, God told him to "smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." (1 Samuel 15:3)
I think that's a pretty good indicator God distinguishes between "murder" and "war".
That's a good point. The media and many dems just come right out and say that people who join the military are at best naive, and unworldly...at worst they are poor minorities with no chance of ever succeeding, except for the military. We know, of course, that no one would ever join for any reason other than a payday.../
~395 years as the abridged, edited, standard version of Scripture for protestants.
Still the standard for many in the South and how many older folks (including my grandparents) learned how to read
To be fair, the translation on Catholic.org (New American Bible version) states, "You shall not kill" and the Douay-Rheims, the standard in the Catholic Church from 1600 to the mid 20th century states 'Thou shalt not kill'.
For Old Testament translations it's wise to go to the source.
Some idiot poster over on the DU has said that this thread is calling this former soldier a wuss. Small wonder the people on DU are constantly misinformed.
It's widely believed that the Ten Commandments were taken from a remarkably similar list in the Egyptian *Book of the Dead* which commands "Do not murder".
(To address the other point here, Miller is no wuss.)
And going to the 'source' I can see the argument very well that ratsach would include any killing depending on the cause of the war (whether or not the action was in self-defenst)
May God bless Blake Miller, his family, and his fellow combat veterans. May they have long, happy, and peaceful lives.
Born on the Fourth of July was playing on AMC channel tonight.
Maybe that stuff about the VA hospital where patents feed rats and shoot up herion is true but it look like over the top propaganda to me.
..liberal wuss
The media willing pushes aside hundreds of soldiers who come through combat just fine in order to get to a soldier who casts some doubts about war....then manipulates it as an bias hit piece against the war in general.
Just another case of the media being the media.
btw I have a friend who went through ptds after THREE tours in Vietnam and sounded like Miller but is a proud supporter of the military in Iraqi.
Only difference he didn't have a reporter twist his feelings into an anti war rant.
Exactly. I noticed an awful lot of what appeared to be conjecture in that article.
Sure, Miller's probably having some adjustment problems being home. It's normal. Even we civilians go through that and we don't see nearly what the Marines do, so I can certainly understand that there might be problems.
In most cases, these post-combat anxieties will pass.
The lib writers just can't resist an opportunity to sensationalize something they can't understand.
