Climate Expert Says NASA Tried to Silence Him
The New York Times ^ | January 29, 2006 | ANDREW C. REVKIN

Posted on 01/29/2006 6:21:03 AM PST by yoe

The top climate scientist at NASA says the Bush administration has tried to stop him from speaking out since he gave a lecture last month calling for prompt reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases linked to global warming.

The scientist, James E. Hansen, longtime director of the agency's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said in an interview that officials at NASA headquarters had ordered the public affairs staff to review his coming lectures, papers, postings on the Goddard Web site and requests for interviews from journalists.

[snip] He said the restrictions on Dr. Hansen applied to all National Aeronautics and Space Administration personnel. He added that government scientists were free to discuss scientific findings, but that policy statements should be left to policy makers and appointed spokesmen.

[snip]

Mr. Acosta said other reasons for requiring press officers to review interview requests were to have an orderly flow of information out of a sprawling agency and to avoid surprises. "This is not about any individual or any issue like global warming," he said. "It's about coordination."

Here is a good one on "dihydrogen oxide" : http://www.magicsoil.com/DiHy/DiHydrogen%20Oxide.htm

I feel suddenly ashamed of and embarrassed by western 'culture', and its so-called enlightenment.

You are most correct...Critics of government often cite the fact that many politicians and others in public office do not consider Dihydrogen Monoxide to be a "politically beneficial" cause to get behind, and so the public suffers from a lack of reliable information on just what DHMO is and why they should be concerned.

Another way of putting it is that it is not 'sexy' enough............thanks for the heads up on (dihydrogen oxide).

Nah, apply the thinking behind Franklin's comment on democracy:

"Democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others."

Western culture and enlightenment are things to be ashamed of and embarrassed by, until you compare them to all the other cultures. Perfection is not necessary to be better than the alternatives. However, when you see something wrong within your culture you must try to correct it, as we are doing now with the insane notions being pushed by the leftists in this country.

Remember, in their day the people cited by Crichton as supporting eugenics were the "progressives" and "liberals." They were the radical reformers and, because they were wiser than everyone else, they thought that they were in the right when they pursued their hairbrained theories and tried to play God.

Once again, the measures being urged have little basis in fact or science. Once again, groups with other agendas are hiding behind a movement that appears high-minded. Once again, claims of moral superiority are used to justify extreme actions....

The elitist movement's road always leads to crippling capitalism, and foster economic egalitarianism and socialism.

The perversion of "science" is just one more propaganda tool.

Dr. Hansen said next he plans to lead a space mission to capture all the dangerous and radical carbon dioxide molecules and imprison them in Hansen's soda pop cans.

dihydrogen oxide

Ah, yes. The dreaded dihydrogen oxide. Colorless, odorless, tasteless, one of the most powerful solvents known to man, and immediately fatal to humans and animals in the right quantity. It causes or facilitates corrosion in all metals when present, and can cause the failure of electronics in minute quantities. It's managed to permeate virtually every living organism and substance on earth due to our careless and profligate use of it.

We need to ban this stuff, and I mean NOW!!

Simply inhaling it will cause death in under 2 minutes.

Hansen is nothing more than a bad scientist trying to justify his existence and not have to face the budget knife.

These idiots assume that the atmosphere is some kind of static environment where no kind of chemical changes take place. They are wrong because it is dynamic and constantly changing. They totally seem to ignore the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.

I'm a meteorologist that disagrees completely with their "science". One need only ask, "What is the source of heat?" If you view plots of solar activity versus temperature you find a near one-to-one correlation. It's one of those scientific "DUHS". Dr. Neil Frank, former director of the National Hurricane Center, gave a presentation on this at the 1995 National Hurricane Conference. Dr. Bill Gray, Colorado State University climate specialist, also stated his opinion of global warming with, "Nuts!" There is a serious disconnect going on here...whoever said scientists are completely honest and ethical? They are trying to get funding by crying "The Sky is Falling!" or in this case "The air is warming!" Give me a break!

Don't demonize this guy; he's with Nasa. Nasa lives with the knowledge that Mars is heating up, that the martian ice caps have been shrinking for years now, and now has the burden of trying to do something about before its too late.

We have to transfer more of our industries to China, we have to sign Kyoto, we have to get Bush out of the White House before he destroys the entire known universe. Its not just about us anymore, we're talking the whole solar system here. People, wake up.

The bovine contribution to CO2 and CH4 comes almost all out the front end, not the rear end. Sorry to mess up your little joke :-)

I posess degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics and have been a scientist for 20 years.

You wrote:If you view plots of solar activity versus temperature you find a near one-to-one correlation.

Very good point. They are also ignoring the physical laws of thermal conductivity and heat dissipation. These processes do not stop because of the introduction of other substances in the system. If you or I held a gun to any of these clowns head's and told them to prove their theories with well thought out scientific eveidence, all would be dead men.

James Hansen is a notorious example of what happens when science is Lysenko-ized. His personal political agenda has long overridden any semblance of scientific prudence. I suspect this latest outburst is just the last straw for an exasperated management

Perhaps because an over zealous liberal fanatic spewing doom and gloom without a "pot to p!ss in" to back it up, is considered a public nuisance.
