He's a civilian and would be treated differently than a soldier.

However a soldier transported to Balad is going to be evaluated for the severity of wounds, and for further evac to Germany. Balad is offically a combat zone, so it's not as if the significantly wounded are going to be kept there for any length of time. It's more of a "patch 'em up and ship 'em out" kind of place.

Mostly I think of Balad as a place where soldiers are stabilized enough so that they can make the 5-6 hour trip to Germany, for serious longer term care.

You're right, we don't know where he stood but sometimes when it's so stacked to one side there is no choice but to use guilt by association until the process balances out. I will say a prayer for their full recovery the same way I do for every trooper that is injured or killed but I want these "reporters" to start giving some respect to our brave men and women instead of slandering them.

It will be very interesting to see what effect this incident might have on his understanding of our military, our soldiers, and the war.

I believe that this will change many Americans perception of the war. Especially these men and their families. I see no problem with wishing them well, and showing them love and compassion. It shows greater moral strength and conviction. I dunno. Hate the sin, love the sinner or something like that. I do know that it has softened the hearts of many, many people.

"It will be very interesting to see what effect this incident might have on his understanding of our military, our soldiers, and the war"

Very true. It was our troops that saved his life.

there is no choice but to use guilt by association until the process balances out.

He was outside the wire. He was voluntarily in a combat zone. I have to give him credit for his commitment to his profession and his perceived reportorial duties.

As opposed to other well-known, MSM "reporters" who bunker themselves in the Palestine Hotel, or who sweat and shiver here in the States, terrified that they might be asked to stop writing anti-Bush polemics and to go to Iraq as an embed (are you listening, Mr. Dee Dee Myers?).

The more I think about it... sticking their heads out of the LAV in a convoy in indian country? I doubt we'll ever hear the whole story on this one, but it sounds exceedingly dumb.

and I wish the MSM would stop using loaded adjectives to emphasize a meaning. Just a second ago CNN couldn't just say treated at the hospital but instead they said "treated at one of the many OVERLOADED hospitals". They keep trying to give the impression that Iraq is just so out of control which is not the case. People expect us to use these expressions because we are far right wing extremest pajama bloggers but a news agency should walk the middle ground.

Yes, I also have first hand experience with LSAA.

I'm perhaps trying to be to precise. Not 100 percent of those sent to Balad hospital are evac'd to Germany, but most are.

Some are sent back to their units. Not many.

From #452-There were four journalists in the vehicle, but two got out to check an equipment problem, leaving Woodruff and Vogt inside. "That's when the explosion happened," Kelly said.

There will be an investigation, and some information will get made public. A lot will not, for operational security reasons.

change americans perception of the war you say? which americans? ABCs audience consists of liberals and sheeple, the only thing this story will do is help the MSM reinforce their alternate reality that iraq is "getting worse", when the reality is that things are turning the corner there.

You have summed up Balad's hospital accurately...

There have been many reporters and photographers in the field that would pretend to take factual aspects of what happened but once they got to the copy and paste shop could distort facts to the point of disbelief. I hope he wasn't one of those but????

"treated at one of the many OVERLOADED hospitals"

Well, that's just an outright fabricated lie.

I personally went to sick call at the clinic (not the hospital) at Balad and waited about 10 minutes before going to the treatment room. The medic saw me immediately, then the MD was there five minutes later, and I was out 10 minutes after that.

I was never in the Balad field hospital, but saw the helicopters coming in maybe five or so times a day, which wouldn't make it "overloaded".

A co-worker went to the Balad hospital several times for a persistent medical problem, and never said anything but good about the treatment he was given there (they actually did suggest he evac to Germany, but he was a civvie and declined the advice because his contract was almost over).
