Hillary Clinton appears in SF (Barf Alert!)

Even 3,000 miles away from Washington, Hillary Clinton couldn't resist zinging the Bush administration to a friendly San Francisco audience Saturday night.

``I've been absolutely amazed -- everyone should -- at the level of arrogance and incompetence,'' she said to wild applause. ``I don't believe I'm alone in that.''

The most-talked about undeclared presidential candidate for 2008 -- whom President Bush himself described Friday as ``formidable'' -- appeared before an audience of 1,800 at the Masonic Auditorium on Nob Hill for an interview with former NBC TV host Jane Pauley.

Aides say the event was designed to show that the ex-first lady and current New York senator is more than just an ardent campaigner.

Pauley's first question to Clinton was why does she think Americans would now accept a female president, as recent polls suggest.

``There's a feeling that it's time,'' she said. ``In the 21st century, people have come to accept individuals on their merits.''

The crowd reacted to that with resounding applause.

But her San Francisco welcome was not all rosy. Clinton showed up more than 30 minutes late to meet the liberal-leaning San Francisco Bar Association crowd. As happens at virtually every stop she makes outside the Beltway, the senator was met by anti-war protesters. About two dozen stood in the rain in San Francisco on Saturday, some wearing big theatrical ears, to decry her refusal to call for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq. They carried signs reading: ``Hillary, You Are Not Listening'' and ``End the War Now.''

About five minutes into the interview, three protesters stood in the upper balcony and yelled ``Hillary, stop supporting the war,'' and they were quickly escorted away.

SFGate.com Carla Marinucci's take on the event tonight

Clinton tests West Coast waters

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/01/29/CLINTON.TMP

(Excerpted)

Among the highlights of Clinton's conversation:

-- On the victory of Hamas in the recent Palestinian elections, Clinton said the world had become less stable, and she was "deeply troubled" by that development.

"We cannot recognize or negotiate with Hamas unless they renounce violence," she said.

-- On the issue of wiretapping, she said the administration had taken a "defiant" and illegal stand: "We had to upgrade and increase our surveillance," she said. "We saw some holes in our laws and we moved to plug them ... (but) what this adminstration is saying is we have a right to do whatever we think is necessary without going to the Congress," without getting court approval.

"There's no reason that the adminstration could not have come to the Congress and asked for the lawful authority," Clinton said.

-- On whether she would renounce her vote in support of giving the president authority to go to war in Iraq, Clinton said she had been told "the intelligence had been consistent -- we now know, consistently wrong" regarding Saddam Hussein's connection with weapons of mass destruction.

"I voted to give (the president) that authority, and I don't regret that vote," she said. "I regret the why he used the authority."

-- On the administration's response to Louisiana residents in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Clinton called it "disgraceful," and added, "now we're turning our backs on them," charging that "a deliberate policy of neglect" has taken root.

IIRC, Hillary was late for a reception at the White House with Barbara and the first President Bush after the 1992 elections.

"Bush, in a CBS interview that aired Friday night, suggested Clinton would be a formidable contestant"

The Republicans must have some really good stuff on Hillary to say this. It seems like they don't want to spill the beans before she becomes the defacto candidate. I love the Jedi mind trick. There are no other candidates...just run Hillary...we have the most dirt on her.

Plantation hillary has been a busy 'lil traveler - she hit Seattle & Portland, also - but no media allowed - so she must have really been ugly.

Who pays for these trips and how come she travels on Thursday and Friday - not busy enough!! Or maybe too many aides on the plantation!!

I want to know where the complete Barrett Report is -- I wrote my Senators and also Reps. Don't laugh - I did and I have heard back. They all used the same form letter - word for word!!
