Tribute To Surf Music
(for Sensei Ern)

When most people think of surf music, they automatically think of The Beach Boys, The Ventures, Jan and Dean, The Trashmen, and The Surfaris.
However, the genre is more than just about these groups. They helped to elevate the genre, but it was the man below that started it all!

Dick Dale - He was born to a Lebanese father and a Polish mother, and soon learned to play the drums, the ukulele, and finally the guitar. Among his early musical influences was his uncle, an oud player performing belly dance music. Much of his early music shows a middle eastern influence. He also began surfing, and soon began developing the sound that eventually became surf rock.

With his backing band, The Del-Tones, Dale's live performances became huge local draws. 1961's "Let's Go Trippin'" is often regarded as the first surf rock song (see 1961 in music). This was followed by more locally-released songs, including "Jungle Fever" and "Surf Beat" on his own Deltone label. His first full-length album was Surfer's Choice (1962 in music). The album was picked up by Capitol Records and distributed nationally, and Dale soon began appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show and in films. His second album was named after his performing nickname, King of the Surf Guitar. Credit belongs here. Dick Dale is considered the *Pioneer of Surf Rock* and *The Father of Surf Music*.

Another interesting aspect is the mixture of Surf Music and Hot Rod music. Many of these same artists created music that not only appealed to Surfers, but also to those that loved to drive fast. Surf by day and drag by night!

So? How does this excite someone of Generation X, Y, and Z? In many cases, it probably won't. However, Surf and Hot Rod Music left it's mark not only on the American culture, but also on the advancement of the instrumentation that you would eventually hear in the heavier guitar genres. Most of the lyrics weren't as sappy as the regular R&B ones back in the day. The songs were about love of cars and surfing. Or it had something to do with either.

For those of you that lived on the West Coast during that time or anywhere that surfing took place, this is for you!
There are different variations of surf music these days. Even when Dick Dale was doing his thing, many Europeans (especially the Dutch)
contributed to rock's subgenre known as *surf rock*. Many of the artists below you will recognize. Some of them may be new to you.
Just click and have a listen!

ahhhh! I love surf music.

I keep warning my wife that when we buy our house, I am piping surf music 24/7 throughout the house and not telling her where I put the base so she can't change it to Phil Collins.

Surf Music is alive and well. Here is the link to a Canadian who is one of the best independants and I would sign him to a record deal today, if I owned a recording studio. http://www.myspace.com/surfinturf

If you are on MySpace, be sure to check him out. Ask him to be on your friends list. He is a good guy.

A non-military-related favor:

My nephew does a lot of stuff for me (like picking up things for me at Detroit's Whole Foods that nobody can buy for me around here, etc.), so I'd like to return the favor -- if I can with somebody from here's help.

He wants Billie Holiday's "Take Five." He's checked amazon and other outlets to see if it's available on CD and hasn't been able to find it. I had a friend check limewire for it, and he didn't have any luck.

I'm wondering if anyone has the song and could post it in the Canteen -- or if anyone has a clue as to the name of a CD with the song on it and could post that info.

I'm not familiar enough with Billie Holiday's music to know anything more about it other than the song title.

Thanks!

The song *Take Five* was written by Dave Brubeck and his wife. The song was written about 1960-1961. Billie Holiday died in 1959. Carmen McRae did the vocals for the song.

Thanks!

That probably explains it! He probably heard somebody singing it in a Billie Holiday style or something.

If you have any thoughts on who that singer might have been, I can pass along the info.

I'll play it here as soon as I fix my entanglement of wires that I'm having issues with.

Carmen McRae's first vocal recording was that particular song.
