I heard it first at Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M in 1967. They'd been doing it for a long time before as far as I know.
It was, of course, a junior privledge to do it.

A lot older than that - I heard it in high school back in the 60s although I'm not sure where it originated.

I was in the Army 1971-1973. I went from unit to unit doing field medical support all over USAREUR.
I never once heard of "Hooh-ah " until 5 years ago.
