BUBBA'S LADY FAIR By KENNETH LOVETT Sept. 3, 2005 New York Post
September 3, 2005 --SYRACUSE--Former president Bill Clinton made a surprise appearance yesterday with his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, during a high-profile visit to the State Fair -- a must-stop on the campaign circuit. The political power couple's barnstorming together stood in contrast to last week's solo fair visit by potential Senate challenger Jeanine Pirro, who has sought to distance herself from her controversial hubby, Al. One aide to Hillary yesterday noted the distinction between the popular former president and the unpopular Al Pirro, according to a recent poll. "I think it helps to have a husband who is the most popular Democrat in New York helping out," the aide said. "There's no place we can't send him. It's a nice ace to have in your back pocket." Bill Clinton said he expects to campaign extensively on behalf of his wife's re-election effort -- in which she's expected to face Westchester DA Pirro -- over the next 14 months. At the sight of the Clintons yesterday, enthusiastic fair-goers mobbed them, whooping and hollering, and taking pictures. "This is about the only place where I think I can do Hillary any good, just because I serve as a token redneck and I know a little bit about agriculture," joked Arkansas native Bill. Throughout the day, Bill frequently put his arm around his wife, sometimes softly caressing her shoulder. The media had been informed ahead of time that Hillary would be stopping by the fair, but Bill had not been announced.
