"Just plain dumb."

Do you think GM or Ford would be in the position they are now if they were smart? This simply fits the pattern. Ford announced they're going big into hybrids. Do you think there's a reason the Japanese have just toyed with it, and only made small cars? The technology is niche technology. If you base your lineup on it, you'll get squashed.

Ford dropped the line about a "better idea" a long time ago, with good reason.

I agree. Who wants a toy car that only your great-grandmother would drive. No wait, Volvo has that market locked up.
