Maybe they are like restuarant employees who don't eat where they work. They see what goes into the product and say, no thanks.
But some of these employees take an active part in building the "junk' they won't buy... I just see some hypocrisy here
Or they simply exercise their consumer rights and select from other products that better suit their needs. Why does it seem that Toyota is always coming up with the innovative stuff. And if not Toyota, other companies besides Ford and GM. In fact, hell, GM was a decade behind on many things only five years ago. They had '80s styling throughout the '90s, which IMO was the big impetus for the slide. Once you get your loyal customers going elsewhere, you'll have to fight twice as hard to get them back.
I was being very reasonable with a problem that I had with my GM truck. In short, for $300 bucks, and having been a lifetime GM purchaser, GM told me they didn't care if I went elsewhere after I made it clear that if they didn't cover that part of the repair cost after I went out of my way to save them five times that, then I would never buy GM again. Well, here I am, ready to buy another vehicle, and it won't be a GM simply b/c of that. So for $300, they cast off a customer permanently. I probably would have kept buying GM in spite of their current issues. At least for trucks.
