Breast feeding can be done discretely with no boobie for any 15-year-old lifeguards to be distracted with. But, the Y is a private club and can make the rules as they see fit. Sigh...

I don't get it. This Y didn't want to have breast-feeding near the pool so they banned it. That's their right. Now, they are going to be treated to "nurse-ins"??
What is wrong with the rule change? Is it soooo difficult to walk back into the wherever one needs to go and nurse? Ridiculous!
And I'm not swayed by the "it's natural" argument either. I mean, doing "number 2" is natural too but MOST folks don't cop a squat right where they are and do it! Most have the decency to go to the restroom to do it.

I do NOT want to swim in a pool where babies are allowed to urinate and defecate in. I also do not want to swim in a pool where babies drool, dribble, or spit up milk.
Public pools are disgusting.

I believe the Y was citing the rule : No food or drink in the pool area. Breast milk falls under both, therefore, how hard is it to follow one freaking rule.

If they want to nurse their babies, they can do it in the woman's locker room. At our YMCA, there are separate locker rooms for woman with children and another for adult woman. The locker rooms are equipped with seating areas as well.

I just want to point out, that if these women have a problem with the rules of a private organization, maybe they should rethink what organization they are actually in.
YMCA = Young Men's Christian Association

You are simply NOT ALLOWED to make such a comparison!
Get ready for the attack of the Free Republic Militant Breast Feeders! ;P
Just a note - this thread is doomed. This story (or others like it) appears from time to time, and it always results in sanctimonious outrage and excessive flameage...

For once, I think the breastfeeding ban is correct. I don't necessarily agree that the lifeguards should be distracted by it, but if noone else can eat by the pool, then neither can baby. I don't understand why any Mom would want to nurse at a pool. Our YMCA has a nursery for babies. Moms can go in there and nurse. And leave baby, so Mom can watch older children.
I wonder what they're gonna do about leaky boobs in the pool. lol

The thought of a fat mother, sporting a soakin' wet bathing suit, whipping out her giant boob to feed (an adorable) baby, is disgusting. I nursed my kids, so I know about "demand" feedings..but it takes one minute to find a private area to feed a crying baby. Nobody wants to see this in a public place, much less a pool area where you're practically naked already. Yuk!
To: frankjr
I am pro-boob. I'm just an amateur. ;-P
