Albany -- Edward Cox, a son-in-law of the late President Richard Nixon, said Thursday he would not resume his campaign for the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's re-election bid this year.
The Manhattan lawyer suspended his campaign in October after Republican Gov. George Pataki endorsed then-Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro's bid for the Senate nomination. Her campaign subsequently collapsed and Pirro heeded the call of state GOP leaders to run instead for state attorney general.
That left former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer, little-known statewide, as the leading contender for the GOP nomination. Some GOP leaders pressed Cox to consider getting back in the race.
However, Cox said in a statement issued Thursday that "after careful consideration of the circumstances and conditions as they exist surrounding the race, including the now shortened time frame available to run an aggressive and effective campaign, I will not seek my party's nomination."
Last week, in an impromptu interview with The Associated Press, Cox said one condition for re-entering the race was a solid endorsement from Pataki. The governor subsequently made it clear no such endorsement would be forthcoming in the near future.

Is there no serious Republican willing to undertake this race?
Good. Now John Spencer can turn his full attention to pillory Hillary!.
What's Spencer, chopped liver?! :)
Whoops. Sorry, SmithL. That was meant for you, LL :) Spencer seems like a pretty good egg.
You need a good egg to make chopped liver. :-)
Bank on it.
No. Hellary, the carpetbagger, picked her constituents well. Socialists know where their bread is buttered.....
If she quit, its the same thing.
It was the Dick Morris theory.
She either has to win, or thats it.
If she quits or loses, she is done.
A quit is equal to a loss for all effects and purposes.
I know of Mayor Spencer and I think he'd make a good Senator, but outside of Westchester County, who knows who he is?
Where is Lew Lehrman or someone of that ilk? McConkey? Anyone.
Well, if the RINO establishment would get behind John Spencer, maybe, just maybe, he could get some press and an audience to hear his pitch. If John Spencer could just outpoll expectations, he'll damage the Hildabeast's national ambitions.
I will refrain from commenting on John Spencer.
Personal experience.
Hillary Rotten is detestable.
I will support Spencer if he is the nominee, but Conservatives nationwide can look forward to a Rotten Victory.
King is going to have a hard time winning his seat. The Dems are doing alot of outreach to hispanics, and their numbers are growing on long island.
pataki is the true dummy. He has no chance in the presidential run, he could beat Hillary for the senate.
Teh Republican establishment, especially in states like New York, would rather see Hitlery win than a consrevative.
