A Pakistani immigrant admitted on the witness stand Tuesday that he came up with idea of bombing the 34th Street Herald Square subway station in the summer of 2004.
Testifying at a special hearing in Brooklyn federal court in an effort to have his statements to police kept out of his upcoming trial, Shahawar Matin Siraj admitted under questioning by a federal prosecutor that he talked to a government informant about targeting the subway station.
Siraj, 22, of Queens, is slated to go on trial in April on charges he plotted with the informant and another man to bomb the subway and other area bridges. Siraj is appealing a failed attempt to get asylum.
But outside the courtroom defense attorney Martin Stolar said that his client was entrapped and intimidated by the undercover operative into going along with the plotting. The attorney said that a surveillance videotape even had a timid Siraj telling the government informant that he needed to talk with his mother first before becoming involved in the bombing conspiracy.
"'I want to ask my mother,'" Siraj said on the recording, according to Stolar.
The tape was not introduced into evidence Tuesday but is expected to be a key piece of evidence at the upcoming trial.
The defense maintains that Siraj was tricked by the informant into becoming part of the conspiracy and thinking up ideas for terrorist acts. "It was his idea after nine months of the confidential informant working on him," said Stolar. "This was a young man who was not predisposed to violence." Court documents do not identify the informant, but Stolar identified the person as "Osama Daoudi," who the attorney said was an Egyptian. p>

Our oath of citizenship requires new citizens to swear allegiance to our government. Obviously Muslims cannot take this oath in good faith. It is unfair to ask them to and it is unfair to our existing citizens to accept immigrants who can't honestly make this promise. We should never allow another Muslim to immigrate.

Bowing to the gods of political correctness and multiculturalism.
Good hardheaded common sense seems to be out of favor these days.
Some groups make less desirable immigrants then others based on their cultural background. All the wishing and PC rhetoric in the world won't change that. Just look at the immigrant crime stats, they differ significantly by ethnic group.
You import people from deeply dysfunctional countries with completely different social mores, surprise, it causes problems. These days, it can also help support a terrorist attack on the host country.
Until this issue with Islamic terrorism is resolved, we should severely curtail or eliminate all immigration from Muslim countries.
