Steelers fans want more than a win over the Seattle Seahawks on Super Bowl Sunday. They also want Myron Cope back in the broadcast booth.

...

But it's not going to happen.

"It's really just not realistic from the standpoint of his health," said Joe Gordon, a former Steelers publicist and close friend of Cope.

Gordon, speaking on Cope's behalf, said the 77-year-old Mt. Lebanon resident was hospitalized with pneumonia just a few weeks ago. Cope has been troubled by health problems in recent years and had throat surgery in

I wish the best for Cope, but I think he should sit back and enjoy the game. He's earned it.

He likes to watch the games by himself anyhow!

Check out this excellent article!

You are right; I read that article. By the way, I wrote a "steeler song" about winning the superbowl for Myron. It's a parody of a U2 song and contains clips of "Copeisms". I didn't do it for money. It has been downloaded a lot. Find "In The Name Of Cope" at www.pittsburghsteelersmusic.com.

This Steeler fan doesn't want Myron (the way he is now) back in the broadcast booth but of course if he could miraculously recover..:).. of course I'd also want Jack Fleming back doing play by play.

As liberal as the PG is, that article is wonderful! One can only imagine how Cope would've sounded, had he broadcast that game.

Yes it was a wonderful piece, done with great affection. I especially liked the writing of the last sentence of this paragraph.

****

"Before typing his pieces, he spread all his notes across the floor, searching for a way to move beyond that terrifying and great moment when the story existed purely in his mind. He thrived like few other writers of his era. He mastered a style that would later mirror his oral storytelling -- he flowed from scene to scene in his narratives, lovingly riding tangents, as if train-hopping, but always returning to the original direction."

****

That is such good writing.

Myron Cope shouted Howard Cosell into silence. Nobody who heard him will ever forget the Cope years with the Steelers.

I love that cartoon...I remember when the Towel was first introduced. Myron, doing one of his commentaries on WTAE-TV, and he told the faithful to bring a yellow towel (because towels were manly, and wiped up sweat) in response to Houston fans' waving some kind of hanky (Myron thought they were surrendering). The commentary also dissed those pompoms on a stick (that used to be popular) as being girlie. I think the yellow towel idea was used when the Stillerz were playing the Oilers (in the Bum Phillips days) in the playoffs. Days after that game the 'official' (printed, and sold) Terrible Towel came to be.

What is really so nice about the Towel, is that Myron gave the royalities (amounting to millions at this point) to the Allegheny Valley School for Exceptional Children. Myron's son is autistic and a resident there.
