A government-sponsored program is giving Ithaca College students and faculty the opportunity to learn more about Islamic and Malaysian culture from Dr. Mohammed Zin Nordin, associate professor and dean of the communications school at Universiti Sains Malaysia.

The Fulbright scholarship program, funded by Congress and administered by the State Department, is sending Muslim scholars to 33 colleges and universities throughout America this spring in an effort to enrich understanding and correct misapprehensions about Islamic societies.

Many years ago there was a belly-dancing exhibition put on at Cornell. Although I was somewhat young at the time I was able to appreciate that these belly dancers, of which there were a variety, were not only capable of demonstrating their art but were actually also quite attractive and sexy. This all took place in a large auditorium which was packed. Most of the audience seemed to be graduate students from Arab countries, many in native dress. I knew of one such student who was from Bahrain. I suppose this type of show would nowadays be considered both too un-PC and un-Islamic to be put on in Ithaca.
