Former GOP state legislator says he'll challenge Sen. Feinstein

WASHINGTON (AP) - A retired GOP state legislator said Tuesday he'll run against Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., when she seeks a third full term next year.

Richard Mountjoy of Monrovia, Calif., who served in the state Assembly and Senate for more than two decades before term limits forced him out in 2000, is the only Republican who has announced plans to challenge Feinstein. Software executive Bill Mundell explored the idea before taking his name out of contention in November.

Feinstein, 72, who has emerged in some polls as California's most popular politician, is heavily favored for re-election in the Democratic-leaning state. Mountjoy, 73, said in an interview that he hasn't begun raising funds or discussed his candidacy with Republican Party leaders. Still he said he would be competitive.

...snip...

"I think she's wrong on almost every issue out there today," Mountjoy said. "She's wrong on many, many issues, you name the issue. She's wrong on the moral issues, she's wrong on the issue of marriage," he said, citing Feinstein's opposition to Proposition 22, the 2000 initiative that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

She is also in the not the sharpest knife in the drawer. She knows very little about many things.

Richard Mountjoy is a fine, honorable man and would easily get my vote. It's a shame he doesn't have any money and most California voters have s*** for brains.

At 73, he should be training a candidate, not running himself.

He has helped other candidates.

I like Mr. Mountjoy, but can't the Republicans find someone younger? A weak, haggard old woman who is as kooky as the city of San Francisco where she was mayor surely can't win against a young, quick witted and energetic person, even in California.

The Republican party in California must have some kind of deal with the psychotic liberals not to run anybody who can win...

You noticed.

Dick Mountjoy is a great guy, but in this case, he's more likely to be fodder for the "conservatives can't win" crowd.

And if elected, I will not run. :-)

I have no doubt of that.

I agree. Too bad nobody has stepped forward in this race and it looks like we're ready to concede yet another Senate race.

I've known Mountjoy personally for over 40 years and I can't think of a finer person to represent us in the Senate.

Bravo for Mountjoy. He takes on the impossible when his party is afraid of their own shadow.

The CAGOP won't challenge Feinstein. They won't even challenge Schwarzenegger.

Here's a man past retirement age, willing to take up the fight against liberals.

Bravo

And Senator Mountjoy has said that "if somebody with money gets into" the Republican primary that he's willing to stand aside.

I noticed in Monterey, a lot of the so-called Republicans are just check pants, country club, cocktail party liberals who would vote for a total loser in the primary so that a conservative could not take on that socialist Sam Farr in the Congressional race. The Santa Cruz Republicans weren't really very helpful either.

And if elected, I will not run. :-)

Exactly...

LOL, Feinstein being "California's most popular politician" isn't saying a lot.

Mountjoy has a lot of name recognition across the board because of his strong stand against MTBE.

Dick Mountjoy ran for Lt. Gov in 1998 and didn't even win the GOP primary getting just 25% of the party vote. He lost that to Tim Leslie, ultimately our cannon fodder for Cruz "Mencha" Bustamante.

Part of the over-70 crowd, Dick's almost as old as Feinstein herself!

Please name me some conservatives who have won in CA in the past 10 years? Name some Republicans who've won statewide. The later is a tiny number and at least one, Chuck Quackenbush, was forced from office in an abuse of office scandal. There's Arnold, incumbent up for election this year. There's also the road kill called Bill Jones who almost lost to Boxer by as much as Keyes' lost to Obama.

We need to focus on getting Arnold reelected (and McClintock elected Lt Gov) in November to prevent a full Democrat sweep in this state.

Unless she falls off her broom in mid-flight, Feinstein will win in a walk.

That's be fine if he was 10 (or more) years younger.
