White House race: GoP banks on McCain to beat Hillary

WASHINGTON: Republicans are warming up to John McCain as the politician most likely to beat Hillary Clinton to the White House in 2008 and to clear the party of the taint of sleaze.

A poll last week showed McCain could trounce Clinton, the Democrat favourite, by 52 to 36. The 16-point lead reveals that he has a decisive advantage among independents and swing voters.

"The more scandal and corruption in Washington, the better it is for McCain. He is at a high point right now," said Chuck Todd, editor-in-chief of National Journal's Hotline news service, which commissioned the poll.

The Arizona senator's standing among Republican activists nosedived after he was beaten by George W Bush to the presidential nomination in a bitter race in 2000.

However, McCain went on to stake out an independent position on the war in Iraq, which he considers to have been botched, and he led a successful campaign in Congress to ban the use of torture and the cruel and degrading treatment of detainees.

Republicans have found the maverick senator indispensable in their struggle against the blues that have afflicted Bush's second term.

McCain is at the centre of every debate, where his hawkish views on the war on terror, Iraq's future and a nuclear Iran have won him respect.

In Congress he is leading his party's efforts to get out of a mire over lobbying and corruption after Jack Abramoff, a Republican lobbyist, was indicted for attempting to bribe politicians.

As do I, but when there's the rare article about Senators trying to hold the line on pork, McCain has usually voted in support. It's the one positive I'd give him. It doesn't come close to balancing his many negatives.

The artickle title should read: "GOP banks left on McCain..."

At first I was a little unsure I'd done the right thing in changing my voter registration from Republican to "Decline to state in November, 2002." Everyday, however, I'm gaining confidence in my decision!!!

So far I like George Allen, but the election is still a long way off...

Fair enough.

Unfortunately I think McCain is just another poster boy for "TERM LIMITS"...along with 15/16's of his cronies.

2008 could be the year of the 3rd party then.

Kinda like 2000?

I would not support McCain in the primary, but when the primaries are over I will support the Republican nominee.

If that's McCain, so be it.

I haven't noticed vote getting tremendous growth in the lame-brained 3rd parties, and I guarantee you I'm not voting for the democrat.

If this is true, the GOP has lost its mind. May God have mercy on this nation.

I knew Senator McCain when I was in the Navy -- not well, and more by reputation than up close and personal.

His Naval Academy, flight training and short active duty career (before he was shot down) is not the stuff a future President would aspire to.

Mainly, it is a story of his taking maximum advantage of the Flag Officers in his lineage -- his Daddy and Granddaddy were Admirals.

His service as POW was honorable, and I commend him for it.

But, somehow, I am suspicious of his character flaws, and believe that he is not really what he seems: IOW, I do not trust him, and believe him unfit for Commander In Chief.

And, I think he still has cancer. Check out the lump on his left jaw, and his complexion. He does not look healthy.

21. Now, suppose the general election for president in 2008 were being held today between (ROTATE) Republican John McCain and Democrat Hillary Clinton, for whom would you vote? (IF UNDECIDED/REFUSED ASK:) Which way would you lean as of today?

              TOTAL Dem Ind Rep
McCain 47% 18% 51% 77%
Lean McCain 5% 3% 6% 5%
Clinton 32% 61% 27% 7%
Lean Clinton 4% 5% 5% *
Undecided 11% 11% 10% 10%
Refused answer 1% 1% * 2%

<< Republicans have found the maverick senator indispensable...

I predict the maverick will not be the GOP nominee for 2008. >>

I predict a victory for you and for every one of those of us who supports your prediction.

A McCain "presidency" [Barf] would be no less deadly dangerous for our nation and for the entire Judeo-Christian/Western/Human Civilization we vanguard than woul another Mrs Billy-Bubba Blythe Cli'ton Crime Family once-white house be-squatting and be-manuring.

I suspect that Sen. George Allen has a better shot at the nomination than McCain.

I'd still like to see Condi run, but George Allen is a very good choice too.

The McCain/Feingold act that takes away Americans' right to political free speech sixty days before an election will hit the presidential race for the first time in 2008.

When that hits and with McCain's name attached to it, I don't think conservatives will elect him as dog catcher, let alone President of the United States.
