WASHINGTON -- President Bush has long cultivated the image of a macho rancher, frequently donning his boots and Wrangler jeans to clear brush on his sprawling Texas property. But he was decidedly noncommittal today and even a bit nonplused when asked for his reaction to the most talked-about ranching film in years: "Brokeback Mountain."
"I hadn't seen it," Bush told thousands of students and professors at Kansas State University, responding to a query from an audience member. "I'd be glad to talk about ranching, but I haven't seen the movie."
The movie, featuring the love story of two gay cowboys, this month won the Golden Globe award for best motion picture drama and top honors from the Producers Guild of America and is showing remarkable success even in conservative, red-state towns and cities that helped reelect Bush.
But if Bush intends to see it, he showed no such desire today when the young man in the crowd raised the idea toward the end of a lengthy, unscripted and unexpected question-and-answer session.

"You would love it," the questioner persisted. "You should check it out."

Both externally and, I suspect, internally.
BTW, the kid from the remote ranch whom Simon decided to bring to Hollywood also seemed light in the loafers to me. This is shaping up to be a very strange season, so far.
OMG! You got to see one of his "best" really really LIVE?
That is great - glad you got that "happening". Did he appear to be as relaxed as viewed on tv?
"His most daring role yet!" -- Ebert & Roeper
"He's won the Oscar of my heart!" -- Rex Reed
:)
Garrett the cowboy? I don't know ... he seemed okay to me, though his choice of an Elton John song is a bit suspect :)
He was very relaxed.
This was definitely one of the top 5 experiences of my life.
I am REALLY glad I had the nerve to request press credentials for this (since I am officially a member of the press...just college though, I thought I would give it a try). They didn't care that I was just college.
Incredible experience. :)))))
I'll defer to your judgment on these things. How old is he? I didn't catch his age. Randy and Simon are right about one thing...there is a voice inside that kid, but whether or not vocal training will help him improve, I'm not sure.
It isn't "Fudgepack Mountin'"?
Who knows, he might make into the Top 12. I mean, if Mikalah can ... :)
Well, George could probably have flipped the guy off with the following response, but he's too polite:
Broke "what" mountain?
"...and every single one of them feels the need to voice an opinion."
LOL, yes, and offer an alternative title!
About 6.5 million people have supposedly seen BBM, which is approximately 2% of the population. Since the number of homosexuals in America is pegged at anywhere from 2 to 4%, I guess the majority of people seeing this movie are presumably of that persuasion.
Egads. I've been wearing cowboy boots for as long as I can remember. They are so comfortable, and make for handy and useful tools when ya need 'em. :)
Erotica is erotica. Political Identity "politics" players play on erotica as a political message carrier. IOW, your daughter is expressing some real emotion here -- and exactly, from all I've read, the film's purpose was -- to "titillate". Of course the ho-hum liberal elite are trying to call it an intellectual "master" piece. rofl.
Why were they laughing at Bush's answer? I don't understand what was so funny.
BBM = a gay movie with straight cast members tirelessly promoted by conservatives through their outrage.
That is sooo bad. I love FReepers. LOL
