The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, which typically handles just one aircraft carrier at a time, will be home to three carriers at once this fall, said Navy Capt. Joseph Campbell, the yard's commanding officer.
The three carriers make up one-quarter of the nation's flattop fleet and are scheduled to be in the yard simultaneously for several weeks.
The USS Harry S. Truman arrived at the yard Jan. 9. It will be joined by the USS Theodore Roosevelt in September and the USS George Washington in October. The Truman is scheduled to depart in November.

No matter how good you think your security is, the bar girls in Olongapo, Yokosuka and Naples know about ships' movements LONG before the skippers do.
I looked it up on a map. I used to walk this route believe it or not to go to the mall and then back through Oceanview to what was Denny's for Pizza. Go out Hampton Blvd from NOB turn up what looks like 165 toward Wards Corner. The road angled off to the left it wasn't a hard right turn and a scuba supply company was on the road. Cross Chesapeake BLVD To Little Creek and down to Oceanview BLVD. Some how I can't remember once we walked that way to the mall also.
It was weird seeing Hampton BLVD again though I got there right after the strip joints & bars were taken out in the mid-late 70's and nothing was up that road till you got to the theater on the left. Now it's fast food row LOL and to think what I used to do for a blame pizza. Back then if you wanted fast food it was either a bus ride to Military Hi-way or somewhere or the grill down at the piers at the rec center I think. I'm not even certain Denny's was the name of the pizza place next to the old amusement park it may have been Dennis. It was the only fast food actually in Oceanview at the time I remember that much.
To get to Va Beach I just drove straight through Ocean View, & on down the road. I used to drive down there on off duty weekends to the park and cook from my old Coleman stove in my pick up. Anything for a change. If I wasn't going home I'd also head out of Portsmouth down 17 toard Nags Head a lot of times just to get out of town. I walked only because I had nothing to drive. When I came home off my first cruise I had wheels.
xrp owned.
I vaguelly recall that there were five visible from the interstate a few years ago. But maybe it was four. They were quickly moved, however.
Actually they do indeed and often actually. We have some dead Marines, Soldiers, Airman, and Sailors who died as the direct result of terrorist attacks. The Pentagon is not a civilian target nor was Beirut, nor the Cole, nor Lockerbee, and a host of others. They attack targets of opportunity. BTW plenty of civilians work on that base likely about 50% of the base working population. There's a lot more there than just ships.
I was with you until you got to Lockerbie. There is no way to classify either the plane or the town as a military target.
Yes. Thanks. I figured out how I miscounted. The Vinson is a Pacific ship, but I was counting it against the Atlantic number, and so I missed one.
So there will be two Atlantic carriers in service instead of one, assuming the Kennedy is discarded.
You're thinking of Taussig Blvd, I think.
My first thought, also.
You're right. I was thinking of Gander which never was resolved. But it had left the M.E. and was at least suspected of being such. My mistake. BTW here is an interesting link on attacks http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ho/pubs/fs/5902.htm
I remember the Captain of the Big E ran her a ground in SF Bay about 18 or 20 years ago. I believe he is still counting penguins in Antarctica.
I'm not swearing to this but IIRC KENNEDY is and has been ever since I can remember out of Mayport Florida and still in service. She did do some reserve training status time in the 1990's but I think she still remained in Mayport even then. Back in 1980 the Navy decided to swap AMERICA and KENNEDY home ports. The crew was told to start considering making re-location plans for family etc.
The last word I heard before I got out in Oct 80 was AMERICA was going to Mayport as home port. That order after I got out was quickly rescinded likely for political reasons.
My comment was directed to the fact that the navy canceled the Kennedy's scheduled COH and announced plans to prematurely decommission the ship in 2006. There has been a push to move one of the Virginia based ships down to Florida to take the Kennedy's place, but I haven't kept up with recent developments.
First I'd heard about a moved up 06 decom date. Thanks. Looks like Bean Town clan is pushing for another shrine. Well she's the last of the conventional steamers. Kinda watch and see if the Mayport pier actually gets another home port carrier or not. The way things are being done they may start using it as a rotating part time carrier port of call instead. Just a hunch.
They were going to use the Kennedy to replace the Kitty Hawk in Japan, but the Japanese have agreed to take a nuclear powered ship with certain restrictions that the navy can apparently live with, meaning that the Kennedy is no longer necessary. And it is a ship which has ruined several careers.
The navy is going to really alienate the Florida congressional delegation if they don't move a ship in to replace the Kennedy.
Yep the ship was done like her next older sister. They've almost decomed her once before which was part of the problem. The Pentagon {Clinton era} didn't give her proper maintenance funding and that resulted in the Captains getting the shaft over her readiness issues after 9/11. I've got a good guess as to the restriction but I won't say it.
For security & readiness reasons they should move one to Mayport actually they should make room for home porting two so we don't see more pictures like these.
I hate to see JFK go. Actually I hate to see an all nuke carrier fleet for many reasons including mass causality issues. I think it's a big mistake training wise. It greatly limits the number of qualified Snipes who could otherwise step in and take over in even of mass causality. A conventional Machinist Mate, Electricians Mate, etc can be standing Top Watch before a nuke snipe ever sees the ship. Even after he gets there he still has to qualify for entry level watch.
We did repairs that would never be allowed on a nuke nor should they ever for that matter.
