Why? Because it'll be within filibuster range, and then the left wing zealots over at DU and MoveOn.org will flip out, demanding their party move more to the left, and the Democrats will have no choice but to comply. This country won't vote for a leftist party, but the Democrats will move left anyway as a result.

I also want the Republicans to remember that if the dims take the presidency next election but we still hold the Senate that because of the dims it's now ok to vote against the nominee if you don't agree with him.
Put the dims in position like they are trying to create right now but with the power to really block a nominee.
How many RAT senators are up for re-election and where are they from, Blue or Red states? Those from Red states could be in trouble with the electorate if they vote against Alito. Nelson, Dim of Nebraska has already said he would vote for Alito possibly staving off a conservative back-lash at the urns.
