A literal belief in the creation story is not one of the requirements for Christianity, as far as I know. At least Jesus never said anything about it, as far as his teachings are recorded

John 1:1
 ¶In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2  The same was in the beginning with God.
3  All things were made by him;
and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John 5:46
 For had ye believed Moses,
ye would have believed me:
for he wrote of me.
47  But if ye believe not his writings,
how shall ye believe my words?
