Nothing in my 50-year career prepared me for the thousands of flaming e-mails I got last week over my last column, e-mails so abusive and many so obscene that part of The Post's Web site was shut down.
That column praised The Post for breaking the story on lobbyist Jack Abramoff's dealings, for which he has pleaded guilty to several felony counts. The column clearly pointed out that Abramoff is a Republican and dealt mainly with Republicans, most prominently former House majority leader Tom DeLay of Texas.
I wrote that he gave campaign money to both parties and their members of Congress. He didn't. I should have said he directed his client Indian tribes to make campaign contributions to members of Congress from both parties.
My mistake set off a firestorm. I heard that I was lying, that Democrats never got a penny of Abramoff-tainted money, that I was trying to say it was a bipartisan scandal, as some Republicans claim. I didn't say that. It's not a bipartisan scandal; it's a Republican scandal, and that's why the Republicans are scurrying around trying to enact lobbying reforms.
But there is no doubt about the campaign contributions that were directed to lawmakers of both parties.

Smithian reflection?
ohmyohmy...the he is a she.
oops!
The left moons you and you kiss their ass, eh?
You deserve what you get.
I would think if you are a lobbyist you can only lobby by having clients spend their money on politicians ...what is so hard to undestand about that? ....Abromoff spending his own money is no big deal...
For some reason liberals find themselves dumbfounded when a conservative counters with questions regarding China's illegal contributions to Bill Clinton's Presidential campaign.
Say it fairly: he told the Indian leaders whom to bribe..and they did. If he ends up in jail, they should also. They know exactly what the game is.
Deborah Howell did everything she could to be a good liberal, and she was still excoriated by leftists. Look for her to be more obedient to the dems next time.
"50 year career." Impressive. Most scumbags retire long before that. Their looks go early you know.
Deb you have met the enemy and it is you according to you fair weather "friends"
Deb you have met the enemy and it is the truth according to your fair weather "friends"
This is a stupid, hairsplitting argument. Abramoff didn't give any money to Democrats, but his clients did. Probably a heck of a lot more than Abramoff ever could have given the Dems. Does this version of events serve any purpose, other than to obscure what happened?
They deserve each other.
(I wrote that he gave campaign money to both parties and their members of Congress. He didn't. I should have said he directed his client Indian tribes to make campaign contributions to members of Congress from both parties. )
What's the difference? The end result is the same!
My husband actually counted Republicans and Democrats to whom Abramoff's money was directed, and the ratio was two Rs for every D.
For what it's worth.

The part in parenthesis appears to be editorializing, but it is grammatically correct.
So, people in both parties received donations, but it's only a Republican scandal? Wow, the liberals have never been so up-front about their bias.
