I hope you're right, but Republicans have to be prepared to fight for Alito if there is one.

I fear that conservatives are going to misinterpret an Alito confirmation. They'll assume that Alito and his supporters won this on the basis of good performance. That's not the case. Alito's testimony wasn't that spectacular. He looked good because the Democrats blew it by acting like total buffoons. I'm sure that even Karl Rove was astonished at how poorly Ted Kennedy & Company performed.
There's no guarantee that they'll screw up again if another vacancy occurs. Careful choosing and planning is the key should that happen. Overconfidence could be fatal.
