This creates a potential opening, especially if the 83 y/o Akaka decides to call it quits.

Shaking the establishment is not alaways a bad idea.

Well, Ed Case is slightly less liberal than Daniel Akaka. Though that's still quite liberal.

Case? I'm guessing he's a white guy.

We need an Asian/Islander Republican in this race. The race card can work both ways.

Sounds like Case is just very ambitious. Unless a senator is considered very vulnerable it is extremely rare for them to face a strong intra party challenge. Still, with both Hawaii senators in their 80s, maybe some think a younger generation should take over.

Is Abercrombie still in the House? Talk about far lefties.

I think it also means that the House Dems realize theyt have ZERO chance of winning the House in the next decade or so..and it is really NO fun being in the monority in the House..it's a plantation, you know..

Abercrombie was Inouye's Chosen One to succeed. This is the way it has always been in Hawaii politics - you wait your turn until your name is called. A very Japanese kind of thing. Case has really shaken things up. You should have seen Abercrombie on the local news last night, quivering with rage. It was choice. Yes, sometimes shaking up the establishment is a good thing.

Hawaii's other senator, Daniel Inouye, said Case's decision "stunned" him.

Yeah, because he's next.

The RATs and the Akakakites and Inoways are in complete control of HI and Case will not happen. Case does not have the aloha, more's the pity.

The best thing would be for both senators to have to step down because of age and the gov can appoint replacements.

Hawaii's governor is a Republican, so if both Inouye and Akaka stepped down she would name Republicans to the Senate.

Well, yeah, and the same thing would happen in Mass. if Kennedy or Kerry stepped down.

But why in God's name do you think there is a chance of this happening?

I'm sorry, I thought you were replying to the post that pointed out how old the Hawaii Senators were.

I think if Akaka is reelected he may not make it to the end of his term, which may allow a Republican governor to appoint his successor. And even if he serves out his term, we'd probably have an open seat in 2012. However, if Case wins, he might serve for 30 years before the seat opens up again.

I'd rather have Case lose the primary so badly that he doesn't dare run for the Senate again, giving Governor Lingle a better chance of winning Inouye's Senate seat in 2010 (when Inouye will probably retire and Lingle will hopefully befinishing her second term as governor).

And if Case and Akaka beat each other up, it might give a Republican an outside chance in this year's Senate race.
