All the Irish all decended from Kings. I am on both sides of my family (although someone tried telling me that I wasn't Irish because my family only moved there in the 11th century -- but there was a branch there hundreds of years before that).

This was probably the only interesting thing I've read about in the New York Times in weeks.

Thanks Waggs. Turns out that this Niall guy was gay as a (obscure anachronistic reference follows) wild goose, and the real origin of this Y chromosome was the O'Neill's mailman. It's kinda sad, really.

Sounds like I may be one of this guy's descendants. The furthest I can trace back is Cullo O'Neill, who helped Robert the Bruce win an important battle in Scotland. Instead of continuing with the O'Neill name, Cullo's son became McCullo, or McCulloh, or McCulloch. My great-great-great grandpappy Henry Eustace McCulloch and his brother Benjamin missed the Alamo only because Ben got the measles while they were on the way to Texas to meet up with close friend and neighbor, Davy Crockett. He was a Texas Ranger, fought in the Mexican War, fought in the Civil War (he and brother Ben were the only two brothers who were both Connfederate generals). The name began to be spelled McCullough after one of his sons obtained a land grant and the name was spelled wrong. The family decided it was easier to change the family name than the grant.

The study points out that one of the O'Neill dynasty chieftains who died in 1423 had 18 sons with 10 different women and counted 59 grandsons in the male line.


It is a little known fact that O'Neill was the first NBA player. ;-)
