Washington, D.C. - The political action arm of Club for Growth, the nation's leading free-market advocacy organization with over 34,000 members, today endorsed sitting Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) in his bid for re-election to his San Antonio-based House seat. He is running against former Democratic Congressman Ciro Rodriguez and Victor Morales in the Democratic primary. This is the first ever endorsement of a Democratic candidate by the Club for Growth PAC.

"By voting for CAFTA, to repeal the Death Tax, to prevent huge tax increases, and for supporting school choice, Congressman Cuellar has become one of the House's most pro-economic growth Democrats," said Club for Growth President Pat Toomey. "The House of Representatives would be better off with more Democrats - and even some more Republicans - who demonstrate Rep. Cuellar's commitment to their constituents' prosperity through economic freedom. It is particularly noteworthy that Rep. Cuellar cast these votes for a stronger economy despite intense pressure not to by some in his party."

"Former Congressman Ciro Rodriguez's record is a prime example of what we don't need more of in Washington," Toomey said. "During his eight years in Congress, he established one of the most anti-growth voting records, consistently supporting higher taxes, wasteful government spending, and a protectionist anti-trade agenda. He even voted against allowing poor families the freedom to choose the school their children could attend."

"While Congressman Cuellar's record isn't perfect, it is far better than his opponents' and his demonstrated commitment to pro-growth principles over politics is exactly what the Club for Growth PAC looks for in Congressional candidates, regardless of party affiliation," concluded Toomey, "It's why we're committed to helping elect him, and more legislators like him, to Congress."

State Rep. Richard Raymond (D) won't challenge Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) in a primary, TX Dem sources tell the Hotline.

Ex-Rep. Martin Frost endorsed Raymond in 6/05, saying he would be the best candidate to defeat Cuellar, who was blasted by Dems and allies for his pro-CAFTA vote and his '00 endorsement of Pres. Bush over Al Gore.

Cuellar and Raymond both hail from Laredo, leaving them to battle over the same hometown base. Another potential Dem candidate is ex-Rep. Ciro Rodriguez (D) whom Cuellar defeated in '04.

Rodriguez already has the support of many of his former colleagues, but redistricting carved out most of San Antonio from the district; the city is a stronghold for Rodriguez, making a successful campaign an uphill battle.

2004 RACE: TEXAS DISTRICT 28
Henry Cuellar (D) - (59% of vote)
James Hopson (R) - (39% of vote)
Ken Ashby (L) - No reports on record for this candidate

OTHER CANDIDATES WHO RAN
Chris Bellamy (R)
Francisco Canseco (R)
Gabriel Perales Jr. (R)
Ciro D. Rodriguez (D)

Hot on the heels of his CAFTA sell-out, The Hill reports that Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar is likely to face two challengers in a tough primary battle next year. Dissatisfaction with Cuellar goes back to before his days as a member of the House, though. In 2000 he endorsed George W. Bush over Al Gore in the Presidential election. In 2001, he was appointed Texas Secretary of State by Rick Perry. In 2004, Cuellar barely won a primary race against sitting Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Ciro Rodriguez.

Other House Democrats are already involved in the campaign to unseat Cuellar.
