As Mirza notched up success after success on international courts -- she went from 987 to 34 in the ATP ratings in just 4 years -- an obscure Islamist group in Mirza's southern hometown of Hyderabad issued a fatwa against her. The Muslim teenager's clothes on court, it claimed, were "un-Islamic" and it ordered her to cover up.

The article sounds like the problem is primarily Hindus, which makes sense. Until recently the ruling party was the BJP, a Hindu nationalist party heavily influenced by the RSS. The RSS is best described as a combination of a European fascist party and a Hindu equivalent of the Taliban.

Extremism isn't just a Muslim problem.

That is an outrageous statement to compare the RSS to the Taliban. The RSS has never stoned or shot a woman for showing her ankles. This is a totally ignorant statement and obviously made by someone that has never been to india or knows the facts. Sania Mirza is a Muslim woman and the fatwa on her is from Muslim clerics. The RSS is conservative but more in the Jewish trend. To compare them to the terrorist Taliban is outrageous and reeks of ignorance.

However, the Centre and the state governments still have the final say on law in India, if I recall correctly. The issue is religious, but based on the militancy of Hinduism in India. They fight "immoral" Western values, including, unfortunately, the right to change faiths.
