Wish you were queer … there's manliness and there's Manliness (re: new Aussie gay surfer movie)

SURFING'S equivalent of Brokeback Mountain is being filmed on Sydney's northern beaches. Directed by Ed Aldridge, a Brit, it's called Tan Lines, about two gay surfers in a small town somewhere on the NSW coast, and managed a few media mentions here when announced last year.

But it took a London newspaper to discover that Manly surfers are outraged about it. The Independent on Sunday devoted a two-page spread in its latest issue to previewing the beginning of shooting this week, before it heads to Newcastle in March.

The paper interviewed a bunch of Manly's finest, who excelled at creating a picture of a tolerant, welcoming suburb, including these quotes on gay surfers:

Clinton Moody said: "I've never bumped into any. There's too much testosterone in the water for them."

Mark Washington said: "It's not the sort of environment to be openly gay. You have your shorts and boards - how can you be gay?" (We're not sure what that means.)

Tim Plunkett said he didn't have any problem with gay surfers, as long as they didn't kiss between sets of waves. "I feel it's more of a manly sport, and as gay men have more feminism in them, it's not likely to appeal to them," he said. (Try telling that to the women's champion surfer, Layne Beachley.)

Meanwhile, Matt Wilson did his best to counter the prevailing view. "Many board riders are homophobic," he said. "When you are a kid, you think it's not cool to be gay. When you grow up, you realise how stupid you were."

The Sindie found a gay surfing group in Melboring, which had more women than men, and told its readers of the origins of Manly: "named by an explorer after the confident and masculine local Aborigines".

Director Aldridge didn't get back to us by deadline, but if Brokeback Mountain is any guide, his film won't enjoy a wide release. Despite the cowboy flick winning four Golden Globes, its distributor, Roadshow, has brought only 48 copies of the film into Australia. Compare that with the national number of screens on which these films are now showing: Chronicles of Narnia (412), King Kong (288), Rumour Has It (238), and Mrs Henderson Presents (75).

WOW! That many?

Whew. We don't go to the movies often. Guess we didn't miss much.

This is what typically happens in hollywood.

As soon as something comes out with even a minimal amount of success or media attention, 30 copycat projects are launched and they continue to spin them out till the trend is done.

I predict now all hollywood movies will include gay themes and all the major stars will be lining up for gay roles.

I'm sure that in the new Indiana Jones movie, Harrison Ford will have gay sex with his Egyptian buddy on a river barge going down the nile.

Harry Potter and Ron will fly somewhere in the car and explore urges together during a summer away from Hogwarts.
Voldamort will regain his true form by having a gay orgy with the death-eaters.

Next Bond movie, their will be a bond boy, instead of a bond babe.

All hoping it boosts their oscar chances.

C'mon, lots of good jokes at work.

They're re-doing all the classic westerns.

Pillowfight at the OK Corral

How the West Was Decorated

The Good, The Bad and The Gay

For a Few Dollars More (He'll Swallow)

Clint Eastwoods famous line "Go ahead punk, make me gay."

Add in network and cable TV and it has been an avalanche of the gay agenda. Not that I watch them, I'm just on overload with all the news about the topic.

Mtv/Viacom has been promoting a gay and bi-sexual agenda to teens for over a decade now.
Their "reality" shows are loaded with homos, lesbians, and bi's. Many of the shows glorifying high school age kids who experiment with gay sex, telling them its the cool thing to do, and promoting it as a right of passage.

HBO has been nicknamed "Homo Box Office".

Being as ratings are not as important as they used to be before pay-cable TV, they can get away with this crap. If the media moguls had to rely on ratings revenue only like they used to, these shows would have disappeared after the first few flops.

And yet sheep herders are are unusually quiet about Brokeback mountain.

They're going, "Thank God. They think we're doing each other! But my secret is safe with ewe."

"You forgot Capote, Alexander and the transvestite movie."

I did forget about those...in fact I'm not sure what Capote and the transvestitie movie are - is that Truman Capote?
