As I recall, Army coffee was thick enough to chew.
I'll never forget the ass-chewing I got when I removed some "unnecessary" equipment from my FDC track and installed a "silver bullet" coffee percolator.
CO and the Bn Cdr were pissed when they saw it in the field, but they came around every night and every morning for the latest batch. The chow wagon wasn't even set up and everybody in the HQ was wired ;)
After that, I never heard a word about it.
