The Romans knew this, and built an entertainment industry around it.

...and we haven't?

Our entertainment industry tends to have actors pretending to be bad people pretending to suffer. (Of course some of the actors really are bad people in real life.) The Romans enjoyed watching people actually die in front of them in the arena. It's the difference between an actual gladiatorial contest and a movie about gladiators.
