Local labor leaders are fuming over Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's last-minute appearance at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast in San Francisco -- and a lot of their anger is directed at former Mayor Willie Brown.
"We've spent a year and a half, and millions of dollars fighting this SOB,'' San Francisco Labor Council head Tim Paulson said of the governor. "For him to come to this breakfast was an absolute insult."
Paulson also had a few words for Brown, the lawyer/lobbyist and talk-show pundit (he regularly appears on TV with this column's Phil Matier) who helped engineer Arnold's well-covered appearance.
"Willie was pimping him in front of us,'' Paulson said. "Willie has gone over to the other side."
The governor's last-minute invite to Monday's event at the Golden Gateway Holiday Inn set off a boatload of behind-the-scenes fireworks, some of which are still exploding.
It all started last week when Schwarzenegger's office called Brown and asked where he thought the governor should appear on MLK Day.
The governor was thinking about Los Angeles. Brown suggested San Francisco.
"I brought him here when he was first elected," Brown said. "And I thought -- given his new (leftward) direction -- it would be highly appropriate for him to continue the trend."
A call followed to breakfast committee chairman Millard Larkin, another friend of Brown's -- and the next thing you know, Arnold was on the bill.
Paulson, who was out of town when this was happening, didn't hear that the governor was coming until the night before the breakfast.
Although not officially connected, the San Francisco Labor Council has long been a big supporter of the King Day breakfast and has traditionally been part the program.
"I went absolutely crazy," Paulson recalled. "I said, 'You should tell him he's not welcome.'

Isn't it sweet irony. Typical small-minded, bigotted liberal hypocrisy
Aaaaah, another example of tolerance by the left.
I feel all warm & fuzzy
This is why reaching out to racist organizations is just plain stupid and a waste of time. They are full of hate and bitterness. (cancer of the soul) You don't see black mayors/governors/etc. reaching out to the KKK. American blacks in general are the most racist people in America. (not that there are not many racist whites, etc., but they are not coddled by the politicians, SCOTUS, Justice, MSM, etc.).
Do they think MLK would have turned him or anyone away? These poeple that pretend to follow his "dream" are at best snake oil salesman.
In the alternate Universe, the headling was "Governor's no show at King breakfast angers city's labor leaders"
-- given his new (leftward) direction --

Good bye Arnold.
People with different opinions need not apply.
The NAACP and its members do nothing but exclude, and divide, and hustle, and blackmail, and HATE.
Ahh yes, democrats gathering to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, and more hatred comes out.
"Und you know vhat I'm talkink aboud!"
Black people?? Racist??? Nah!!!! thats impossible.
The NAACP follows the old union dictate; "Don't kill the job".
I guess Arnold should be glad he missed the Kwanzaa get-together!
Yeah good to see the liberals around SF don't run exclusionary national holiday events, etc.
If he did not show up, they would be angry.
MLK day should be banned. It gets African American 'leaders' all in a lather, they feel free to bash whites, whites feel guilty. It sets back race relations.
Straight from the mouths of the Party of Compassion and Decorum.
(I have a few choice words that I like to use to describe your average Labor Leader as well, but my deeply-instilled sense of decorum absolutely forbids me from repeating them, verbally OR electronically.)
Rev. King would be appalled at how his name is being used, on this one national holiday, to incite division, racism, and hatred. All of the things which the good reverend spoke against.
Who owns this plantation anyway ?
