Israel the 51st state
By Bradley Burston

There was a time when Israelis would routinely refer to this place as the 51st State. Only half in jest.

It was a long time ago, when Israelis still spoke of America with the same wistful reverence they reserved for talking about heaven, and for many of the same reasons.

America was more concept than destination then, a fictional place free of the realities of Israeli daily life. No death, no taxes, no terrorism, no call-ups orders for military reserve duty to occupy Arabs and face down their suicide bombers.

Fine free public schools. Safe streets. Freedom from bureaucracy, freedom from intrusion, freedom from suspicion as a person of Mediterranean aspect.

This was the time, the decade or so following the Yom Kippur War, in which Ben-Gurion Airport, kept enlarging its Departures area, and decreasing the space allotted to Arrivals. A bad sign.

Israelis no longer joke about being 51st state. These days, the concept is seldom bandied about at all. Perhaps, having gotten to know the millennial America better, Israelis no longer fantasize about it coming true. Or because, without their realizing it, in some ways it actually has come true.

If opinion polls are a measure, Bush could be expected to take 60 percent or more of the Israeli vote, especially because the opponents of disengagement would likely find the Democratic candidate even more unsympathetic to their cause.

Red State :)

We know that Benjamin Netanyahu was born to be a U.S. senator from New Jersey. Failing that, Israel could send him instead.

Bill Buckley came up with this idea about 40 years ago. It didn't gain much traction. :)

Once officially part of the US, security would be a done deal. Can you imagine, say, Florida tolerating weekly suicide attacks on marketplaces.

What if Israel were, in fact, the 51st state?

Non-Jewish Zionists would move in from the other 50.

Jeremiah 31:6-9

6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the LORD our God.
7 For thus saith the LORD; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O LORD, save thy people, the remnant of Israel.
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

Hey whatever works...

As I see it, Republicans are strong supporters of Israel and are the Mideast terrorists worst nightmare, while Democrats are the appeasement peace-in-our-time party. Israeli's after the 6 day war even credited President Nixon as the savior of Israel, after he sent everything including the kitchen-sink to re-stock Israeli militaries weapons and supplies, weapons and supplies that they had run out of totally. Without these Israel would have lost that war and would have been driven into the sea. Given that fact and that most Democrats would sell out Israel, South Korea, and Taiwan if that would solve our terrorist problem, why is it that just about 70 percent of Jewish-Americans consistantly support the Democratic Party in every election?

take mexico and make a democratic majority ;).

Mexicans though socially conservative, tend to favor the redistributionist federal dole philosophy of the democrats.
Now cuba would make a fine state. Those cubans are practically solidly republican. They know socialism is a cruel and failed system and would laugh any democrat out of there district.

"why is it that just about 70 percent of Jewish-Americans consistantly support the Democratic Party in every election?"

Because many of them are JINOs.

The government is the reason for the state of the state there. It would also take away the incentive to come to America for work, if they were a part of America.

LETTER FROM A DEPORTEE
Your Country Is Safe From Me
By ELENA LAPPIN

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elena_Lappin

Isaiah 47

The Humiliation of Babylon

1 “Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; Sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called Tender and delicate.

2 Take the millstones and grind meal. Remove your veil, Take off the skirt, Uncover the thigh, Pass through the rivers. 3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered, Yes, your shame will be seen; I will take vengeance, And I will not arbitrate with a man.”

4 As for our Redeemer, the LORD of hosts is His name, The Holy One of Israel. 5 “ Sit in silence, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; For you shall no longer be called The Lady of Kingdoms.

6 I was angry with My people; I have profaned My inheritance, And given them into your hand. You showed them no mercy; On the elderly you laid your yoke very heavily.

7 And you said, ‘I shall be a lady forever,’ So that you did not take these things to heart, Nor remember the latter end of them. 8 “ Therefore hear this now, you who are given to pleasures, Who dwell securely, Who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one else besides me; I shall not sit as a widow, Nor shall I know the loss of children’;

9 But these two things shall come to you In a moment, in one day: The loss of children, and widowhood. They shall come upon you in their fullness Because of the multitude of your sorceries, For the great abundance of your enchantments. 10 “ For you have trusted in your wickedness; You have said, ‘No one sees me’; Your wisdom and your knowledge have warped you; And you have said in your heart, ‘ I am, and there is no one else besides me.’

11 Therefore evil shall come upon you; You shall not know from where it arises. And trouble shall fall upon you; You will not be able to put it off. And desolation shall come upon you suddenly, Which you shall not know. 12 “ Stand now with your enchantments And the multitude of your sorceries, In which you have labored from your youth— Perhaps you will be able to profit, Perhaps you will prevail.

13 You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, And the monthly prognosticators Stand up and save you From what shall come upon you. 14 Behold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves From the power of the flame; It shall not be a coal to be warmed by, Nor a fire to sit before!

15 Thus shall they be to you With whom you have labored, Your merchants from your youth; They shall wander each one to his quarter.

No one shall save you.

Check please...

You are confusing the Six Day War (1967) with the Yom Kippur War (1973). Yes, President Richard Nixon will forever be remembered as a great friend of Israel. Had he not been so loyal to his people and thrown a few to the wolves Watergate would have blown over and he probably would have gone down in history as a great President in most every respect.

I also don't think most Democrats would sell out Israel. Most have been strong supporters of Israel, including some of the ones most hated on FR. They Cynthia McKinneys and Fritz Hollings are the exception, not the rule. You have similar exceptions among Republicans. (Brent Scowcroft, Ron Paul, James Baker immediately come to mind.) Having said that there is no doubt that some of Israel's strongest support comes from the Republican party.

I hate Ha'aretz too, but you have to know what the opposition is thinking. Every so often they write something interesting or so outrageous that I post it with a barf alert.

If you've noticed a pattern to my posting you probably know that I think The Jerusalem Post is the best English-language news source on Israel, except for business reporting where Globes is excellent.

Wow, Nixon was great? Yes he rescued Israel with arms shipments but it was only after delaying the shipments long enough to leave Israel in a desperate position.

In terms of his presidency he should be considered one of the worst Presidents in American history (and I vote Republican 95% of the time). He imposed wage and price controls even though he knew they would be a disaster. He continued the Viet Nam war, knowing that Viet Nam would fall eventually but that he would no longer need to be elected by the time it happened costing thousands of lives of young American soldiers (not to mention Vietnamese). He was about as cynical a politician as ever lived. Those who admire a corrupt politician like Sharon might admire Nixon but those who have at least minimal standards will pass on him.
