SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) Attorney Geoffrey Fieger, recently cleared of criminal wrongdoing in a state campaign finance investigation, on Monday predicted a separate federal investigation will lead to his indictment.
Fieger said would be indicted as a result of a federal investigation into campaign contributions. Federal investigators are looking into contributions Fieger's staff made to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards.
"I fully expect that I will be indicted by a grand jury, who will indict a bottle of beer if the Republican U.S. attorney told them to do it," Fieger said Monday at a news conference at his Southfield law offices.
"It has never been illegal in this country to give bonuses to civic-minded employees," he said.
Fieger refused to elaborate on the bonuses he gave.
Joseph Bird, a former lawyer in Fieger's firm has said he and his wife each gave $2,000 to Edwards' 2004 campaign at the request of one of Fieger's law partners and were later reimbursed by the firm. Such reimbursements, designed to skirt campaign finance limits, are illegal.
Fieger also said he was grateful to Patrick Shannon, a special prosecutor appointed by Republican Attorney General Mike Cox to investigate Fieger's funding of television ads against GOP-nominated Michigan Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman.
On Saturday, Shannon said the ad campaign did not merit criminal charges, but could warrant hefty civil fines.
Fieger on Monday repeated his claim that state and federal investigations were part of a Republican conspiracy against him.
Officials with the Michigan Republican Party have laughed off Fieger's accusations of a conspiracy.
Fieger, a multimillionaire who is best known for defending assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian and running for governor in 1998, is a Democrat who hopes to face Cox in this year's attorney general's race.
I don't guess I feel too sorry for him.
>>>"It has never been illegal in this country to give bonuses to civic-minded employees," he said.<<<
It is if the "bonus" comes after a boss hints it would be a good idea to make a civic minded donation to a particular candidate, and the bonus amount and donation happen to accidentally be a similar amount...
Figer is such a putz.
Heck, the Democrats in Michigan can't stand Fieger. They were running as fast and far from him as they could get a few months ago when he was talking about running for statewide office.
We ought to permanently give financial support to this guy to be a perennial Democrat candidate. ;-)
*ping*
Fieger needs a vacation. He should visit Club Gitmo.
Would be nice. Even without him, that Canuck bitch is going DOWN. :-D
The Knack.
Fieger's running for AG, but he doesn't have a chance of getting past the democrats' convention.
Granholm hated him, and the dem establishment is mad at him for runining 1998.
He needs to run for Senate or Governor, either as indy or democrat. :)
It takes work for a democrat to lose the city of Ann Arbor.
Call Tom Delay, but doubt if he will commiserate with you, like you did for him, NOT.
Feiger, a multimillionaire, bought a lot of art work from a friend of mine and failed to pay the poor starving artist.....made him beg for years. Ii hope he goes to jail.
With luck, he can share a cell with Doc Kervorkian.
I thought it was they'd indict a ham sandwich for a bottle of beer. Not indict the bottle of beer. The beer is innocent, I tell you......
Snoozer. Call me when his neck is literally in the noose. I don't want to miss his hanging.
