Frank slams anti-gay military: Trashes decision to eject soldier during shortage

Bay State Congressman Barney Frank has joined a battle in defense of an openly gay soldier who was discharged after another private allegedly assaulted him in Arizona.

Calling the move “dumb,” U.S. Rep. Frank (D-4th) blasted the Pentagon’s policy on gays in the military yesterday in light of the recent discharge.

“It’s dumb right now because we have a shortage of people and you are losing thousands of people who want to join,” Frank said.

Army Pvt. Kyle Lawson, 19, who was stationed at Fort Huachuca, was discharged from the military on Jan. 5 - two months after he was allegedly punched in the nose by fellow Pvt. Zacharias Pierre at an off-post party.

In a written statement, military officials at Fort Huachuca said Lawson told his drill sergeant in a letter on Oct. 18 that he was a homosexual. At the time, Lawson said he did not have a “propensity” to act on his sexual preference and continued to train, the statement said.

On Oct. 29, Pierre punched Lawson in the nose, the statement said.

Pierre said he punched his fellow soldier after “provoking actions by Lawson,” the statement said. Pierre also claimed Lawson’s behavior constituted “sexual harassment.”

Lawson made a complaint to the Sierra Vista police about Pierre. The military statement said “numerous witness statements” suport Pierre’s account of what happened.

Military officials took over the investigation from local police and took “appropriate” action that amounted to less than court-martial, the statement said.

No offense taken. I live here, and I just don't get it. It baffles me to not end. People seem so normal, otherwise. (I'm not sure if I should put some kind of sarcasm tag on there...I kind of mean it in a way, and kind of don't.)

"...Had he does this in MA he would have gone to jail..."

Had he done it in Vermont, he would have got less than 60 days...

I don't know why, but I find a grim satisfaction in knowing there is a judicial system more screwed up than ours in Massachusetts...

I live in Mass and I don't get it either! I think they do the same thing they did with homo marraige. They vote themselves whatever they want. Just hearing Barney Frank's name sends chills through my very lower back side. He's such a flaming homo!!!

I prefer the "other" Frank -- Tommy Frank.

Let's run this guy for something...anything!

Being gay is obviously dissociative and a lifestyle centered around responsability for same sex-preferences, all other issues coming second. This form of actual irresponsability for others is basicaly racism and not associative but antisocial inherently. How can we have this in a "military"? It would not be a military but a university of bad tastes.

'...losing thousands of people who want to join..."??

I didn't know the armed forces needed thousands of hair dressers.

I heard Barney was going to run for the Senate so he can turn over a new page.

How do you stand it in Massachusetts? Kennedy, Kerry, even Mitt Romney is a RINO. What's the matter with the people there?

Seriously, I am trying to ask a REAL question. How could one state elect such screwed up people?

I think segregation like male/female segregation is an excellent idea. That way they can still serve their countries. Fact is they're there. They've been there since ancient times. They're not going to go away, no matter how many times they get punched on the nose. So perhaps it's time to evolve out of the denial and deal with the problem.
