San Quentin -- At least nine inmates and two staff members at California's death row were injured during a prison riot in a crowded dining hall, prison officials said Friday.

The fight between black and Hispanic inmates at San Quentin State Prison started around 7 p.m. Thursday in a dining hall with about 260 inmates, said prison spokesman Sgt. Eric Messick.

Officers armed with pepper spray and batons were able to quickly quell the riot. Authorities continued to investigate what caused the fight, Messick said.

One staff member was hit in the face and chest, and another suffered a sprained knee. Both were treated and released, Messick said.

At least nine inmates were injured, including eight who were either slashed or stabbed. One inmate remained in stable condition with a fractured jaw Friday morning, and the others were treated and released, Messick said.

"and the others were treated and released"
What does he mean? They might be treated [complete waste of resources], but should never be released.

The only thing they should be released from is the bounds of the earth. But Death Row in Kalifornia is called Life without here in Florida.

I can't figure out where they got the "death row" part of this, unless it's just the staff members who are assigned to death row. Sounds like these were all general pop inmates, not death row -- i.e., "crowded dining hall." They eat in their cells.

"The prison's Badger Section housing block, a reception unit for new inmates where the riot took place, remained locked down Friday morning, Messick said.

At least 17 inmates identified as being involved in the riot were removed from the general population as authorities questioned other inmates about their involvement, Messick said."

It would be hard to choose a side if ScottyBoy and Westerfield got into a fight with each other.

Those inmates should be sent to prison and suffer the consequence of their actions....

Why the violence. San Quention has strict gun control. Free food, clothing, lodging and paid jobs for all.
Socialist, utopian society is there ever was one.
