MOSCOW, January 12 (RIA Novosti) - Russia could begin large-scale production of a vaccine to prevent bird flu by April, a senior official from the Russian Flu Research Center said Thursday.
Center director Oleg Kiselyov told a news conference: "We need to complete our tests [on the vaccine] ... I hope it will be in production in April."
Kiselyov said that he believed the world could potentially see a major, wide-scale outbreak of bird flu within the next couple of years. Developing a vaccine against such a pandemic strain of the virus would take about nine months, he said.
The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has been coordinating the production of 100 million doses of the vaccine for domestic fowl in Siberia, and regions of the Urals Federal District, which are close to stopover sites used by migrating birds, according to Federal Consumer Rights and Welfare Service chief Gennady Onishchenko. Vaccinations will begin in spring, when young birds appear, he added.
Onishchenko said the Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, had approved an increase in funds for bird-flu-related programs, although no precise sum had been set.
More than 700,000 Russian birds have died from bird flu or been culled in an effort to stop the virus, according to government figures. No cases in humans have been recorded, but concerns have grown that the virus could potentially spread through the south of the country. Turkey has seen several bird flu cases in humans, prompting neighboring countries to seek to tighten border controls.

I actually have to hand it to the Russians. While the WHO, Ho Chi Minh Institute, and the UN are running in circles screaming about the sky falling and H51N might mutate; the Russians develop an immunization for the freaking birds! Common sense from an uncommon source.
Yeah, I was thinking about that....everyone is worrying about if it mutates but no one is doing anything to kill the virus spread before it mutates.....talk about not seeing the forest because of the screaming idiots with their hands in the air crying its all over.

Even if true this may be "locking the barn door after the horse gets out" - my gut is telling me that it's already going H2H in Turkey, though probably not fully aerosolized right now.
What I don't understand is that if we knew that the 1918 pandemic flu was an avian strain and with this current bird flu being in existence for several years why isn't there a human vaccine for it yet?
For the ordinary A and B influenza I think it only takes about a year to create a vaccine, why the delay in one for H5N1?

Simply because it has NOT mutated to a human-to-human transmissible form. Much easier to develop a vaccine for the avian-to-avian transmission. This would greatly reduce the occurrence, and mitigate the exposure rate to humans.
Ok, it makes sense that you can't make a vaccine for an H2H mutation that doesn't exist yet, but if people still get sick from the straight "right off the bird" avian strain why not make a human vaccine out of that?
