BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. (AP) - President Bush traveled to a still-ravaged Gulf Coast Thursday after three months away, promising that a building boom is on its way and encouraging other Americans to visit, too.

Bush's visit to New Orleans and Mississippi was part of a series of events to showcase his priorities leading up to the State of the Union address. He said he was committed to rebuilding communities devastated from Hurricane Katrina.

"People in far away places like Washington, D.C., still hear you and care about you," Bush told survivors gathered at St. Stanislaus College, just a couple of blocks from where Katrina blew ashore.

Bush's route to the college took him down a coastal road past thousands of snapped trees, debris still hanging from limbs and lots emptied of their buildings. There were almost no intact structures - in most cases only concrete foundations were left - and little evidence of rebuilding...

Mississippi was in the direct path of Katrina - it's incredible how much devastation was wrought and yet that fact is hardly mentioned in comparison to NOLA by the MSM.

Duh!

With ALL your tax dollars pouring in there like FLOOD WATER, you bet they'll be shysters scrambling to get it.

The difference is NOLA is a historical major city and the other areas devastated by storms are simply small towns in comparison, even though severely damaged. I live where Rita made a direct hit but we are just a mid size city so no national news.

You mean Bush has come to the startling realization that promising to pay "whatever it costs," using tax dollars, might just spark a "boom"? Feeding frenzy is more like it. If the final bill is anywhere near $200 billion--if it's less than half a trillion--I'll eat my reeboks, without ketchup.

I'm all for property rights but if my house got 20 feet of water and the government was going to pay me predisaster market prices I would settle in a heartbeat.

I guess GWB didn't get my email:

Dear Mr. President,

Move the city of New Orleans to HIGHER GROUND!
Otherwise we are going to be going through the same thing again when a terrorist blows a hole in the levee system.

Semper Fi,
Kelly

good point..
----

Are they being offered pre-disater market value? I'll bet not.. Downtown NO the pre-mo location to all tourist commerce were priced at exorbitant values. Gees, some of those little shacks were worth $700T+ with commercial zoning. Less expensive homes further away Metairie were going for $500T.

Yes, if the plan is adopted as written it would be pre disaster value they would be paid for their homes. I would take that in a heartbeat. Most people that spoke at that meeting are just reacting with their gut and don't really understand what they are being offered.
