This is a conceptual look at putting a solid-state laser on an armored ground combat vehicle for potential use in the U.S. military’s Future Combat Systems program.

Not quite that simple.
You'd have to grab a mangetron from a microwave oven, chop off all the safety systems so it will work immediately.

But you'd have a magnetron spewing microwave energy in all directions.
You'd have to redirect some of it in the proper direction.
You'd also have to have five or seven of them in a circular pattern like an LED flashlight to add extra oomph to it.
And some way to power it.
Basically, you'd have to have a metal boxy cone leading narrow end from the emitters to wide end towards the door.

So you'd need a couple high output microwave ovens as emitter donors.

Sounds good to me. Actually it knocks my sox off. LOL!!

I almost think it might work!!!

(Of course, I would probably also drink your coffee if I had the chance, too. LOL!)

You also have to remember to insuate the magnetron from the metal backing plate with a chunk of cardboard.

(Might work, but I'd have to tinker with it myself first before being 100% certain the workings and 'build' of such a device.)

Thanks for the ping! I'm out of town until Sunday & don't have the ping list on hand - but I'll catch things up when I get back.

Not sure that would work too well, because as your picture makes clear there are going to be line-of-sight issues. Even conventional artillery can shoot over hills. Put one on an Apache helicopter though and then you're talking...

Maser would appear to be the correct term

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maser

"Initially, visible light oscillators based on stimulated emission were called optical masers, but this terminology has become uncommon. It is more conventional now to refer to devices that emit in the X-ray through infrared portions of the spectrum as lasers, and devices that emit in the microwave region and below as masers. There is some debate over whether maser or laser is the correct generic term for all devices that produce coherent electromagnetic waves through stimulated emission.

Distinct names were originally proposed for devices that emit in each portion of the spectrum, including grasers (gamma ray lasers), xasers (x-ray lasers), uvasers (ultraviolet lasers), lasers (visible lasers), irasers (infrared lasers), masers (microwave masers), and rasers (rf masers). Most of these terms never caught on, however, and all have now become obsolete except for maser and laser."

The ground tests look promising... ;)

(Imagine them scurrying into the hills when they read this.) LOL!
