US Senator and former Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry today denied that he was opposed to outsourcing IT jobs to India and said "any company has a right to make an economic decision that it wants." "What I opposed was the non-economic choice made by some companies with an eye on tax benefits. I was worried about loss of pension and healthcare benefits," he told reporters after meeting Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy here.
Kerry, who is here as part of his India tour, said he would meet CEOs of IT companies for a "first hand understanding of business outsourcing." Terming his 30-minute meeting with the Chief Minister as "fruitful", he said they discussed about opportunities for cooperation in areas of healthcare, transport and infrastructure.
Kerry also called on TDP Supremo and former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the latter's Jubilee Hills residence.
Soon after his arrival here in the afternoon, Kerry visited government chest hospital here and met the officials there.
"I think some stories that came out of the campaigning last year suggested to some people that I have a specific problem with outsourcing itself. What I was complaining about in the course of campaigning was not the right of companies to outsource," Kerry said when his views were asked on offshoring issue. "Any company can make a decision that it wants. Obviously, in a competitive environment, that (outsourcing) is going to happen," he said.
Kerry had a word of praise for Hyderabad saying it was going through economic transformation and emerging as a major centre for business outsourcing.
"I have come here to study all aspects of economic transformation and figure out where we can see mutual advantage and partner and work together," the influential Senator said.
Replying to a question on Iran, Kerry said it was "silly and dangerous" on the part of Tehran to resume Uranium enrichment.
"If the problem is not solved in a few weeks through diplomatic efforts, then there is no choice but to take the matter to international community," Kerry said.
He supported it before he opposed it and he is supporting it now and will oppose it during next run and then he would.... well you get the idea...
Trying to keep up with all his flip-flops may cause brain pain for Kerry and thus a new purple heart.
Kerry does not care if American IT jobs are sent to India. Its one of the many things he failed to capitalize on during the campaign. I was convinced that Kerry was so rich and isolated that he did not know one person or family affected by outsourcing. And the DNC does not know any middle class people in the IT industry either, so they failed to recongize an opportunity as well.
How do you get from "tax benefits" to "non-economic"?
Seems to me like taxes are paid with money - that makes them "economic", doesn't it?
..he's not sure if he wiped the last time,
Doogle
"What I opposed was the non-economic choice made by some companies with an eye on tax benefits..."
Huh?
Since when are tax benefits non-economic?
i was just about to make that point.
THANK YOU!
Never mind... my bad...
I was trying to make sense of something John Kerry said. I should have learned to stop doing that a long time ago.
Kerry has an immense talent for taking whatever position is popular with at least 51% of the people he is surrounded by at any given time. ;)
I expect this headline within three weeks:
Kerry contradicts denying refutation of abstaining from refusing to disavow the disclaimation of the rejection of the repudation of retraction of the rebutting of the denial of opposing outsourcing of IT jobs to India
The government should mind its own business. Business managers will make their decisions based on cost and benefit.
ROFLMAO!!
People still actually pay attention to Ol' Rice-Butt?
Kerry was for outsourcing before he was against it. You people just don't have the "progressive thinking" required to understand these nuances !
What a dork....
