No, he doesn't know him. He was brought in to make the swimmer happy.

One thing Goodwin Liu said, in fact the very first incident he cited had to do with a memo Alito wrote in 1985 dealing with Tennessee v Garner, the quintessential gun case, though also a 4th Amendment case. The SCOTUS found a Tennessee law unconstitutional that allowed the use of deadly force:

Garner was a 15-year-old burglar and when police responded to a burglary call, they spotted Garner near a fence, shouted for him to stop, he didn't, and the police fired their guns, hitting him in the head--he died in the OR.

Ironically, the Oriental professor cited this case and the memo Alito wrote to argue that Alito sides with gov't, ironic, because Justice Connor wrote a dissenting opinion in the case that more or less coincided with Alito's thoughts on the matter.

I can only wonder if the other three cases he referred to were like this one.
