WASHINGTON (AP) - Two House Republicans said Wednesday they will circulate a petition calling for elections to replace nearly all the top GOP leaders of the House, instead of just former Majority Leader Tom DeLay.
Such a move would put Northern California Republican Rep. John Doolittle's leadership post in jeopardy.
Reps. Dan Lungren, R-Calif., and John Sweeney, R-N.Y., said wholesale changes were needed in the wake of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal that helped force DeLay to permanently relinquish his leadership post.
Their petition would not seek to replace House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., but would subject all seven leadership positions beneath him to a vote after House members return from their winter recess at the end of this month.
Hastert enjoys widespread support among Republicans, and technically it would take an entire House vote - including Democrats - to select a new speaker.
Doolittle is secretary of the House Republican Conference, which is not a top leadership post but gives him a seat at the table when the House speaker, majority leader, majority whip and others meet.

This is a good idea, but begs some questions about WHAT DOESTHE GOP WANT TO DO IN THE FUTURE? It's time for another 'contract with America' for them, to tell us what they will do for America.... if they need help on writing a new one, they can always go to:

I think this is a rino grab for power. Gay speical rights, here we come!
I have to agree. Can them all. House and Senate. They weren't very competent in the first instance anyway.
I agree! Doolittle is the new target. The CA RINOs are after him. He is a solid conservative!
Yeah, it doesn't seem like Blunt's the guy. But hey. I'm available for Speaker of the House, and you don't have to be a member of Congress to be the Speaker.
Yeah: The Senate could use some nbew brooms too. Only as some here state, it could get worse if the RINOs take over.
Wholesale changes in leadership are rare though, are they not?
I got the idea of trying to research the question when the Democrat leadership opened up -- Harold Ford, Jr. presented himself as a "moderate" compared to Pelosi -- his ACU was 25 or so -- to my mind that's liberal -- but I wondered if any time that there was a vacancy in the leadership, and the standing whip was seeking the post, if the standing whip ever failed.
I couldn't get exhaustive data, but it hasn't happened very often.
Look at it the other way.
We might be able to get Pence to run for Speaker.
Or get someone who is more conservative (and less pro pork) then Hastert.
Snow Job!, got to get past the next election so they can get back to getting "RICHER", Hell they might even decide to shorten retirement up again to no years.
