Federal Gov't Installs Pole Barriers at Mexican Border

TUCSON, Ariz — Federal officials will begin installing steel pole barriers this month to stop drug and migrant smugglers from driving through what have been high-traffic corridors along sections of the Mexican border in Arizona and New Mexico. The poles, which will be spaced about four feet apart, will be placed along two miles of border east of San Luis, Ariz., and along a one-mile stretch west of Columbus, N.M., in areas frequented by smugglers using cars, pickups and vans. The barriers have previously been used near San Diego. Officials say smugglers driving around the barriers will go into isolated terrain where they will be easier to catch. Additionally, the western side of the Arizona barrier will end where officials are extending an existing wall of corrugated metal to form a contiguous barrier. The steel poles are 10 to 12 inches in diameter and 12 to 13-1/2 feet long. Heavy equipment will hammer them about halfway into the ground. The poles will also be filled with solid resin. The barriers are expected to be able to withstand crashes of up to 40 mph, said Michael Gramley, a spokesman for the Border Patrol's Yuma sector, which includes San Luis in southwestern Arizona. "This particular design has been put through many different tests, and it appears that it will be effective in preventing vehicles from being able to cross the international boundary and will be very durable if someone is attempting to vandalize them," Gramley said. During the 2005 fiscal year, more than 2,700 vehicles, a record, crossed the border illegally through the Yuma sector, he said.

It's a tiny step in the right direction but it needs to be enhaced so they can't simply transfer from a vehicle on the Mexican side to a waiting vehicle on the US side. And we need to punish the criminals that hire the illegals.

You're bad!

There's a picture of the poles in this morning's SV Herald. It should be availble for posting after noon, today.

You're right, that's the fallacy of a pole barrier. Same goes for the Normandy Barriers that have been put up in the National Parks on the border.

Still, it does slow down the movement of contraband across the border, giving the UAVs and other assets time to catch the smugglers in the act.

If we put a squadron of UAV's armed with Maverick missiles along the border, it would stop all vehicles from crossing, even in the flat areas. Permanently!

I see the cables. However what is to keep them from clipping the cables and going through on motorcycles???

Afterall, wel will not repair them just as we haven't repaired anything else down there in decades.

Hey, why not have a drive-on tow truck on the mexican side. Drive your car on, the truck backs up to the fence, and lets you back off on the American side...I still can't believe we have gotten in such bad shape on the border.

Well, they finally put this article online! The Ohio National Guard emplaced Normandy Barriers in the Coronado National Forest/Memorial last summer, and the activity was written up in the Ft. Huachuca newspaper. It wasn't placed online.

It was, however, posted by the Ohio NG PAO here. The lead paragraph states:

Members of the Ohio National Guard helped plug another gap in America’s border with Mexico last week as their Chinook helicopters positioned vehicle barricades in the Coronado National Memorial, located south of Sierra Vista, Ariz.

Pictures from the article:
